It's coping strategies for handling intense emotions. Pretty standard for people struggling with emotional dysregulation
For some retards (like myself) these are skills that need to be practiced deliberately to internalize them, where for pretty much everybody else it's normal. When people talk about 'intense emotions' they're not kidding either, and they're almost always coming from a distorted frame of reality. "Well I just know that's what he's thinking" (no, that's impossible to know), "yeah this good thing happened but that's not important what really matters is..." (discounting and filtering out things that disprove your perspective), "if this thing happens, then this even worse thing will happen" (you have no way to tell).

There are a lot of distorted thinking patterns like this I could go on about, but take it from me they become deep-seated internalized methods of rationalizing the world around you in a way to make the worst out of everything. You become paranoid and pessimistic, sucking the life out of everything around you. To people outside it can seem like you are going out of your way to find the worst in everything, and that's really what's happening. It's a very nasty way of trying to make things make sense, and it takes practice to overcome.
