ITT we post strange and interesting cat facts

Cats' tongues are covered in papillae, tiny spines made of keratin. In larger cat species like cheetahs, lions, and tigers, the spines are much bigger, and people who have been licked by them have described it as being similar to low grit sandpaper.

<...> i think the jackal was twice his size, jackal passed next to his pile of twigs, he jumped the jackal, they rolled into the bushes in the struggle, and he was trying to drag the carcass up the tree adjacent to the twig pile before giving up and eating like a third of it right there and dragging the rest to the enterance to my house
You really sure that's a cat? Imagine finding a pile of chihuahua skulls one day.

Literally happened to my brother. Not a pyramid of them Khmer Rouge style but the neighbor's chihuahua disappeared and a few days later they found what looked like its ear in the yard. And nothing else, ever.

I consider how people feel towards cats as a personality test. Fucking hate them because you actually have to earn their trust, understand when it's okay to approach them based on body language, and can't kick them down and still expect blind loyalty?
Yeah I'm judging you.

Cat fact: The first cat that's been in space was Felicette who was launched into space in 1963 by the french.

She survived but was euthanized for autopsy 2 months later to understand how space flight affected her. Nothing was learned.
In 2019 a bronze statue of her was shown at the International Space University to honor her.

This thread won't bring @Cats back
Did cats get banned?

Cat fact tax- water sticks to a cats tongue thanks the the spikes on their tongue. Here’s a short video about how cats and dogs drink water different.

Also, does anyone else have a cat that would tip the water bowl over? I’ve heard somewhere it’s because their whiskers are touching the bowl. I’m not sure where I heard that though so may be fake and gay. My cat did it with a static water bowl but since I got a fountain she doesn’t do it anymore.

The smallest species of cat is the Rusty-spotted cat, which is native to India, Sri Lanka, and and a small part of Nepal.
I want one!

Who am I kidding?
I want a bunch of them!

It is a permakitten.
Did you hear that adorable little Mew! when it fell?

Just think about them when they get older.
Can you name anything more adorable than a grumpy, older kitten?
Of course not.
Old grumpy kittens are the cutest things on earth.

Think about an older. grumpy cat.
Now imagine it being the size of a kitten.
Try to think of something cuter.
You cant.

"Don't let the cat out of the bag" is a saying that means, "Don't let the secret get out". It apparently dates back to conmen who would sell people a piglet in a sack and in reality it was a cat. It's also the origin of someone selling you a "pig in a poke". A poke was apparently a bag.

The island Tashirojima (田代島) is a small island in the Miyagi Prefecture, which has a population of under 100 people which is mostly over the age of 65. People who lived on the island during the Edo period raised silkworms for textiles and utilized cats to kill pests which would harm the silkworms. The cat population has since become several times larger than the human population, and the island is also referred to as "Cat Island." Tashirojima was not affected by the Tohoku earthquake/tsunami in 2011, and locals credit the cats for it.

Shotaro Ishinomori (the creator of Kamen Rider, Super Sentai--known outside of Japan as Power Rangers, as well as multiple other series) wanted to move to the island before he passed.
