Most of it, to be honest.
The ‘girl dinner’ stuff I think is a symptom of us having gone insane over gender roles. When I was a kid they used to advertise Lego as just Lego. There was an advert with a girl with pigtails wearing brightly coloured corduroy and a sweater that would have done a boy as well and she’s holding a build and the caption is something like ‘it’s a housecastleship’ . The idea being that it’s just a toy for kids and it can be anything you want it to be. She is clearly a girl. She plays with Lego. Great!
For a while there was a pushback against all this ‘girls can’t be or do x’ stuff and it was good. I kind of lived through that and at the beginning it was ‘you can’t be a scientist you’re a girl’ and at the end it was just doing a job and trying to do it well
And then it all went so wrong. Suddenly if you wanted to play with Lego and cars you’re a boy and we are going to cut your tits off.
I think all this ‘girl dinner’ is a confused reaction to that and trying (badly) to assert some kind of gender difference. . We started off with ‘girls don’t play with that’ and briefly managed ‘play with what you want it’s just a toy’ and then careered madly down the slope to ‘Lego? You must be a man!’
I can’t tell you how weird it is. We could just let people be people, and not give a shit if a Girl likes books and tree climbing or princesses (both are totally fine.) but we somehow can’t manage it. We now have this complete madness that insists that either there is literally no difference between men and women, which is false, or that any behaviour outside the stereotypes is completely aberrant and means you are literally the opposite sex. I feel like everyone’s gone completely mad and that gender stereotypes are MORE rigid now than when I was young.
And the RANGE of what girls are allowed to ‘be’ is narrower as well. There’s no more goths or indie kids or ravers it’s just one look which is like a blow up sex doll and it’s horrid. It’s just so hyper sexual.
So I hate all of it. I hate the looks trends, I hate the clothes trends, I hate the makeup and ‘fifty step skincare’ trends (seriously, take it from an old gal you do NOT need to do all that to your skin, you will wreck it) I hate how women are never shown as just regular three dimensional people but either as Mary sues, or total whores. I just hate it.
Wear what you want, leave your goddamn eyebrows alone, play with what you want, say what you want. Assume every single piece of advertising you see is designed to make you feel bad about yourself so that you either buy something or degrade yourself.
Rant over, sorry. I feel like I grew up in a very narrow window of sanity over this stuff and it’s horrid to see it all go so badly wrong
