It depends on if he went out of state or in state. If I had to guess it's probably somewhere between 5000 - 10000. Most student housing requires that you rent for the whole year and breaking the contract by violating the law might leave him on the hook for the whole year of payments, along with tuition payments for whatever classes he took.
