It's about the positions of the start of the barrel and where you hold the weapon to operate the trigger.

Thus you can have bullpup shotguns even though the magazine is (mostly?) forward of the trigger, because the breech is still behind the firing grip. Or, conversely, the Calico has the helical magazine even more excessively behind the trigger than a normal format handgun, but the breech is still forward of the trigger, so it's not a bullpup either.

Basically, if the main grip is somewhere between the ends the barrel, rather than completely behind, it's a bullpup.
