Specifically with that one it was a machine equipped with an eight way joystick. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but in Donkey Kong having an eight way stick is a major advantage over using a four way stick. There's a technique of steering the barrels where you push the joystick left or right to influence where barrels will drop down ladders. With an eight way stick you can do this while moving up and down ladders while with a four way stick you have to stop.Nothing major, just having a non-OEM joystick that I don't believe would have given him any advantage, but Mitchell claimed to have never played on non-OEM hardware and Jobst had a picture of him playing with a non-OEM joystick on a machine that may have had other modifications as well
Also with that performance the convention organizer, who Billy had called in, said he only played for like twenty minutes when deposed, which is nowhere near enough time to actually get the score.
