I cannot even comprehend donating your money to some youtuber all for the sake of a fucking video game score argument.
Do people go into work and think, "Yes, today my labor will go towards bringing a hot sauce salesman to arcade justice!"

Nah, none of Billy's scores were impossible. We just never have any concrete proof he did them on original hardware, as he claims.
I do like how this shit has turned everyone into official arcade cabinet hardware experts, as if the stakes are higher than the fucking Zapruder film or some shit.

(not shitting on your post in particular, just the general notion that 90% of the people talking about the hardware side of things trying to act like they know more than the Jap engineers who designed it in the first place)

I’m pretty sure the entire MAME thing was just some kayfabe one-upping that was done to create drama for the King of Kong doc.

Oh no, I get it. My problem with it is that speedrunning has so many retarded rules and regulations but people are constantly disregarding them like safety on a job site.

With Billy it's just a matter of what he says and what the evidence shows and the man is just a liar. Over stupid small stuff. Like, I respect the hustle, but you have to pick and choose what to lie about. You can't just deny deny deny when video cameras are everywhere except near you when you're setting these records lmao

The only speedrun video I have ever found entertaining is this:

Can someone give me the TLDR if the cheating allegations are true? I remember a stream where Null mentioned something along the lines of Billy being either a faggot by abusing the courts to silence his critics, or just the possibility of people with enough money having the ability to ruins peoples lives is gay and that's about all I knew about the guy. Other than that I can't really decide if the cheating stuff really is true, as a layman, that video of the way MAME loads the Donkey Kong stages seems pretty convincing, but I don't think my autism is strong to completely understand it.
he got the high score in one of the first arcade video games ever made, and in the 50 years since he's used pretty much every tactic available to him from buying out an entire organization dedicated to video game high scores to schmoozing with journalists and book publishers to codify the title as "the best video game player in the world" because he has the top score in the 1981 video game "donkey kong"

his organization banned the use of mame emulation so its just pointing out the double standard that other people who used MAME got their high scores denied, but he was able to use his MAME playthrough as a valid proof of his high score. it's one of those situations where when it comes down to brass tacks the bookeeping organization failed to maintain proper record keeping and he benefited from it, most definitely in a way that he influenced, and has fought tooth and nail to try and negate the idea that such a thing could be "cheating" because he wasn't the one responsible. even though he probably can play donkey kong like a motherfucker, if you write down all the shit he's done on paper you would be hard pressed to assume he wasn't cheating.

People who understand the actual hardware made pretty lengthy write-ups that go through the evidence step by step und show how and why the video evidence of his high-scores was showing MAME emulation instead of original arcade hardware.
They managed to write it up in a manner that is easy enough to understand for a layperson gamer with minor technical understanding and I would have expected TwinGalaxies to win based on that proof presented. Instead they settled like the absolute faggots they are.

Which means to this day no court has ever found that Billy did cheat on those high-scores.

Karl Jobst makes speedrun content. Speedrunners and the people who are infatuated with it are autistic troons. So yes this is a very big heckin deal to them.

I’m pretty sure the entire MAME thing was just some kayfabe one-upping that was done to create drama for the King of Kong doc.
oh, most certainly, that's how people like billy operate. it's all kayfabe. it was probably specifically brought up because he knew he was guilty of it but it was a pointless technicality that didn't matter or negate the end result, so he probably feels a little tickle of mischief every time it gets brought up that he could break the pointless and arbitrary rules he set for other people

Can one of these nerds do something actually useful with their lives and come over to my house and fix the CD drive/laser in my playstation?

No court found OJ Simpson guilty of killing a white woman, but it's all he is actually known for anymore. At this point Billy's entire reputation is "that weird litigious hot sauce salesman who cheats at Donkey Kong." More people have probably seen the Regular Show parody of him than his actual record-breaking gameplay footage.

because there isn't a difference between emulation and real hardware that matters in this context, those aren't material conditions that would influence his ability to achieve a high score or not. You can argue that it disqualifies him from a certain record keeping organizations but that doesn't make a difference on his high score

There a 4 hour video by Vertias that goes over it pretty extensively, but the TLDR answer is yes Billy cheated. If you don't wanna watch the whole thing then the first bit gives a good explanation on why MAME and arcade look different despite running the same code.

Billy submitted three scores for Donkey Kong that he purported to have all done on original hardware. The only evidence for these scores were VHS tapes submitted by Billy where they show obvious MAME signatures or eye witness testimony from people like Todd Rogers, another infamous cheat who had hundreds of literally impossible scores in the Twin Galaxies database.

After the MAME signatures were discovered, since originally when the scores were submitted no one really knew about that, Billy would spend years defending his scores as legit and oscillating between different defenses. Ranging from the tapes weren't actually his, arcade can look like MAME under the right circumstances, to the tapes were edited to look like MAME. All of that culminates in the Twin Galaxes lawsuit where Billy was sued for fraud for inflating the value of TG, that case was utlimately settled but did provide deposition footage of Billy state numerous provable lies about his scores as well.

Because Billy, likely, insisted they go through and check everyone else's scores for legitimacy if his were taken down. Which is a fair demand, whether you like him or not.

As I stated:
My problem with it is that speedrunning has so many retarded rules and regulations but people are constantly disregarding them like safety on a job site.

Billy is gonna get what he wants. One way or another. They might be autistic enough to catch him but are they autistically driven enough to actually catch everyone else? Probably not.

And nobody claimed that he isn't good at the game or could achieve the scores by playing normally.
The claim is that he violated the rules of the score keeping organization by playing on illegal hardware.
There is a ranking for playing on MAME emulation, which requires more documentation than playing on arcade hardware.

And they should have accepted that. Folding pretty much means the organization is unreliable and worthless in its primary function.
