How convenient that she wasn't willing to provide more context and explain why her mother is holding her check hostage. I agree with @stupid frog and Luna probably owes the United Bank of Mom and more than likely, the Father Tuna Federal Credit Union, as well.

She won't tell us why her evil mother is refusing to give Luna the check and she won't tell us what this check even is, what it's for, or who it's from. I wonder why that is. It's a real head scratcher.

I have to assume it's for food stamps or something like that because I doubt it's a "take this and just leave me the fuck alone," check that her father cut for her. Last I heard, evil dad has been ignoring her texts and they're not on speaking terms. Who the hell mailed her a check, presumably as a gift for her birthday?

To be completely fair to Luna, it's a perfectly cromulent possibility that her mother is just every bit as much an entitled grifter, parasite, and thief as Luna herself. She might just have decided she should get half because she allowed Luna to have it mailed there, or believes she deserves it as compensation for regularly letting Luna bum Xanax off her when she gets her script, or whatever else. But then again, Luna accused her mother of "stealing" in the past because she expected Luna to pay her fair share of their rent and bills once Luna received her phat inheritance and could afford to. It could arguably be seen as a scumbag move for Luna's mother to suddenly start demanding she pay the bills once she knew she had the means, just so mom could hoard more of her SSI check to spend on junk food and drugs for herself - but at the same time, I don't really think a parent expecting their kid to start paying some sort of rent or board once they turn 18 can be called stealing. Anyway, my point is that I wouldn't necessarily assume that Luna is the unreasonable party in this scenario.

Mom almost(?) lost her apartment because she allowed Luna and her roommate to stay there for months on end and Luna leeches off of everyone she knows. Luna probably keeps telling her, she'll pay her back "eventually". So I kind of can't blame Mom for this one .

I’m sure she would, but her mom doesn’t have a bank account so the only places the old junkie could cash a check is at the issuing bank or some check cashing place, either would absolutely require the check be in her name.

I’m sure her mom was red flagged and banned from every bank in NY state a long time ago. This is why check cashing places, not banks, are ubiquitous in the ghetto. I’m sure Luna and Lurch are in the same boat.

I should be focused on Lurch being in the hospital, but I can't get over her discolored boob. I can't even imagine what that looks like IRL without filters. Maybe it's just dirt but it could also just be her skin dying. Either way: really terrifying!

It may well have just been something they did to be nice, but I have a feeling that the workers could see Luna stand around looking shifty for an awkwardly long time waiting for on opportunity to steal it, so they eventually just told her to take it and go because she was making everyone uneasy and/or they were sick of the lingering stench. Or she did steal it and this didn't happen, but it could go either way, since a Bronx hospital cafe of all places is probably decently likely to write off small losses occasionally to take pity on people who can't or won't scrape together $3.

So what's up with Lurch, seizures again? Has anyone told Luna that every single time a known epileptic has a seizure isn't a medical emergency? If he's a known benzo popper also it could be withdrawal seizures, but Luna for sure has a gabapentin Rx and it's hard to imagine Lurch wouldn't also if he is a known risk for benzo withdrawal. Who fucking knows though, abuse of the medical system is a staple for so many lolcows but so are fuck awful unhealthy lifestyles, could be anything or nothing.
