The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

What other good non-systemd distros are there? Currently I run Gentoo on my main box, and a mix of Void or Alpine on various servers. It seems to be more and more difficult to find good distros that doing depend on systemd.

Those are good, I currently run Artix, the version using Runit to be exact. It's the most generic init system they offer that's the closest to the tried and true Sysvinit, which for whatever reason isn't offered here but Runit is just as solid from my experience.

I'm done with technology if it ever comes to this.

On the android, phone topic. I just do graphene. It's about as secure as I will even need, and of everything my phone is probably the thing I need to be the most secure. It's degoogled, with the option to install the sandboxed playstore.

And probably the most important thing on top of those. It just works. Having all the privacy, and security stuff, on top of working perfectly for everything I need. I definitely recommend it. The only downside, is having to get a pixel specifically. But it's understandable, having a lot smaller dev team, around it, to only concentrate on having it work well around a specific device, and continue supporting those for a fairly long time. I forget how long they do for each version. I think 5 or 7 years each. I want to say.

The only other down side is the guy that ran it was a complete spurg. But afaik he isn't involved in the project anymore. Personally I really don't give much of a fuck if I like the person making my software anyway. So really doesn't bother me.

Well today I am the gorilla nigger. On Monday I upgraded one of my Debian servers with a much larger hard drive so I can use it as an auxiliary NAS on top of my TrueNAS. When I was re-installing, I decided to opt for LUKS encryption, which I don't usually use for servers. I got everything set up the way I like and have done about ~40 hours of productive work since, stored only on the Gitea instance hosted on the Debian box.

Well yesterday night the power was knocked out and the servers went down. My TrueNAS is back up and running as if nothing happened, but now the Debian server is not recognizing my USB keyboard during the LUKS decryption at boot. Apparently this is because I opted for a "targeted" initramfs over a "generic" one during the install.

I've rebooted from a live CD to chroot in and regenerate the initramfs, however now I've discovered cryptsetup is unable to decrypt my LUKS partition using my passphrase. I've tried a few different keyboards, checked the layout, and no luck - I suspect my LUKS header file was corrupted somehow during the shutdown and I didn't read up enough on LUKS to make a backup of the header. Seems unlikely, but I'm quite sure I've entered my passphrase correctly.

I run weekly backups on Sunday, so I'm probably SOL on all of the work I've done this week. I'm going to fiddle with the memory a bit before I re-install, because apparently LUKS is memory-sensitive, but my hopes aren't high.

Don't be a gorilla nigger retard like me, and remember:
  • Opt for a generic initramfs over a targeted one unless your hardware is fixed (laptops)
  • When using LUKS encryption, backup your LUKS header file in case of corruption
  • BACKUP YOUR DATA AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE

When the iPhone finally allows sideloading / alt-app stores globally THEN I'll consider it... until then they can fuck right off.
They only really did in the EEA, and since it's a software thing they can just geolock sideloading to the countries within the EEA, unlike with the USB-C debacle where it wouldn't be so cheap to manufacture two separate models for two separate markets.

And even if Apple were to allow sideloading worldwide, Android had a flourishing FOSS community since it's inception, and to this day you can install F-Droid on an unrooted Android phone and enjoy a plethora of apps. Apple's ecosystem doesn't have that legacy and it won't build over one and a half decades worth of FOSS app development which made Android what it is today.

I used to care a lot more about what runs on my phone. These days, I just find it too irritating to try do stuff on, and if I've got something serious to do, I do it on a PC.

I'm curious if there are specific apps you need that would require such, or if it's just a principled stance against the walled garden?

They do have some (beyond just the ones you can get via jail breaking) with AltStore and stuff, but its not as big as Android because it's such a pain to install and update them.
whether it'll gain more popularity in the future is up for debate, I personally dont think it'll happen.

After a much needed upgrade, I nuked my ancient Fedora 39 install on my laptop and fresh installed Fedora 41 - KDE spin, of course.

I don't care what they say, it just works.
