As I see it, the best he gets is a reduction in damages. However, this may be a U.S. thing, but Karl's complaining the judge didn't actually get any real expert testimony on the regular damages part of it. I'm not sure Billy had to, and have no real opinion on that, although in the U.S., generally damages like that require more than getting up and bawling on the stand about your feels.

So he might get a reduction. But this is the point when a reasonable person would consider throwing in the towel. Actually, that point was long ago. This is the point when even an idiot of normal idiot capacity would consider that.

And yes, the other potential avenue is malpractice (or just an administrative dispute before the relevant bar association). They appear to have bungled the procedural history and chronology in a way that Karl looked even worse than he would have otherwise. I'm basing that thirdhand since neither party was exactly forthcoming as to what exactly was going on in the case.

The defendant usually actually does get a final statement before sentencing, or at least has the right to make one. Now, the judge can actually say your final statement made you look like such a remorseless monster that he's actually upping your sentence for it.

I believe the major part of the damages are due to the comment sections proving that people were believing Karl and his narrative. (Reputational Harm)
Bringing those comments in was a genius move by Billy's lawyers because it is an independent verification of the general public believing the claim.

As far as I understand it in defamation cases, if the defamatory imputation is found as such by the judge, damage to the defamed party is implied.
For major money awards additional evidence is considered to verify what effect the defamation had, and there
a) the judge believed Billy to be affected by the claim to have pushed someone to suicide and visiting his priest to have someone to talk to and
b) the judge brings up the comments under Karl's videos as proof that people believed the narrative

I really do not see that as a topic for an expert. Billy's side provided great evidence and Karl failed to challenge it properly.

Ironically Karl's supporters fucked him with that stuff. Still, I'd argue YouTube commenters are not only not members of the general public, they aren't even human, much like redditors.

I don't even like hotsauce but my family does, so I've ordered a bottle of the habanero to have on some tacos or something. I'm not expecting anything great, I just think it's funny. Billy might be a lying cheater (but not even a cheater in a way that matters, just singleplayer video games) but he could be worse, he could be Karl 'can't hold a single' Jobst.

someone should correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure the whole claim about him cheating was just that he played on an emulator, right? and that it was potential that he DID cheat? it was so long ago that i learned about all this that i don't remember if he was actually confirmed to have cheated on any scores.
