The only reason he misses college is probably because it was socially acceptable to be "figuring things out" at that time and because there is a lot of planned socializing you can do to make friends if you're the type of person who is bad at doing it organically. It's sort of the last chance a lot of people bad at making friends have at making connections before they're thrust into the world where most people aren't looking to expand their social circle and you'll have to find how to make friends on your own. There is hobby circles but a surprising number of people aren't into doing anything where they'd meet up with others like that.
