Highlights from an evidence-based research paper on Incel men and boys​

What do Incel's believe? As a woman, are you clear on their ideology? What do women need to know about the global phenomena of femicide and crimes against women and girls by those who identify as male, especially when the males who commit these crimes cite as motivation their lack of access to women? The starting point to understanding the phenomena and the mind of an Incel could be found in a recent report.
It was around 5:00 p.m. on a warm spring afternoon, and I was sitting on the balcony overlooking the garden, when I placed down the research paper Involuntary Celibacy: A Review of Incel Ideology and Experiences with Dating, Rejection, and Associated Mental Health and Emotional Sequelae (2022) after reading it cover to cover.

By 7:00 a.m. the next morning the penny dropped: the information this report provides needs to be placed in front of those who are impacted — anyone who has or has had a womb, and has carried the XX (female) chromosome from birth, because YOU are the main focus of Incel ideology.
Simply put: Incels are entitled men and boys who feel they should automatically have access to, or increased access to, women — no matter what. Rape is advocated for. This ideology needs further analysis to keep women safe.
The above cited research report found that:

"As it was feminism that promoted and encouraged women to have a deserved right to sexual agency, there has been much discussion in the Incel forums dedicated to the reversal of gender equity. Many of the proposed solutions involve some form of coercion, rape, or a complete return to enforced monogamy under strict patriarchal rule."

Why do women need this information?​

Based on the above citation from the report on Incels, it appears it's not only our safety, but our global women's rights that need an eye kept on. When I wrote the essay Adolescence: The Incel Wake-Up Call Netflix Gave Us, I encouraged women to look out for other women and young girls, and understanding the mindset of the XY Incel movement is part of this.

I say "XY" Incels as I want to be clear that I am referring to males who were assigned male at birth, as studies show it is this demographic of society that identifies as male which enforces, upholds, participates in, and advocates for the Incel movement.

At the time of me writing this, data supplied by The World Bank estimates that as of 2023, there are 4,007,523,965 women in the world. Over the last ten years, this data shows a steady increase of women globally from 3.61 billion (2013). That's a lot of women in danger from a demographic of men who feel entitled, especially sexually entitled.

Here in Report One of the Incels Exposed series I'm putting together, the focus is on highlighting the key findings from the Involuntary Celibacy: A Review of Incel Ideology and Experiences with Dating, Rejection, and Associated Mental Health and Emotional Sequelae (2022), to give an overview of:

• The Incel and Red Pill ideology currently, and it's inner workings concerning attitudes towards women
• Its rebranding to the Black Pill which is on the rise at the time of me writing this, and why women need to understand this new wave of male attacks on women and young girls via the Black Pill perspective.

What research-based evidence shows that Incel, Red Pill, and Manosphere-associated males believe​

Andrew Tate, Kevin Samuels, and the YouTubers Fresh and Fit et al. are the main introductions to Incels and their ideology that many of us had. It's important to understand that while they may have been seen as the face of the movement, or even the founding fathers due to their success across social media, they were not. These men were and still are just the runner boys.
According to B. Sparks, A. Zidenberg, and M. Olver from Kings College London, and University of Saskatchewan, Canada in their report Involuntary Celibacy: A Review of Incel Ideology and Experiences with Dating, Rejection, and Associated Mental Health and Emotional Sequelae (2022), which I will refer to as The Report from here on out:

"Involuntary Celibates" refers to a loose collection of individuals who are experiencing sexlessness despite their desire to be active." — The Report (p. 732)

Incels also believe that:

"Society is organised along a looks-based hierarchy that dictates much of social (and sexual) relations." — The Report (p. 732)

The sexual and looks- based hierarchy of Incels:​

Within The Report we can see the hierarchy Incels have created which aids in their targeting of women, and their grievances towards us which "explain" why they target us:

• Chads- attractive, very financially stable, and the most sought after XY males (according to Incel ideology) who are at the top. This is estimated as 20% of all men. Incels express extreme hate and jealousy towards Chads. These men are at the top of the sexual and looks-based hierarchy.
• Staceys — the women Incels desire, who normally prefer "Chads." The women most likely to avoid or overlook an Incel due to his lack of attractiveness to her personally. Unattractiveness is not always physical; it could be lack of wealth, personality, hygiene etc. These are the women who end up hated, harmed, harassed, stalked, or murdered by Incels.
• Normies — the average Joe, who is an XY male in the middle of the hierarchy.
• Incels — the undesirables (in the Incel's viewpoint) at the bottom who don't have access to women. Or the men who simply have extreme grievances with women's freedoms, rights, ability to say "no thanks" and blame this for their lack of connection with a woman. They also envy and strongly dislike the Chads.

How XY males highjacked the label "involuntary celibate" and turned it into harm against women and girls​

Let's go back a step. Before the Incel's looks-based hierarchy was established in this underground community, the term Incel did not refer only to those who identify as male. It was coined by a woman. In 1997, a university student named Alana created a website to document her dissatisfaction with the dating scene. We can assume, she was (at the time) a woman dissatisfied with males and their behaviour. She titled it Alana's Involuntary Celibacy Project. The Report makes reference to Alana on page 732.
At the time of me writing this, I have tried unsuccessfully to locate Alana's website, but it appears to have vanished from the World Wide Web. However, her 2018 interview with the BBC can be found here.

The woman who founded the 'incel' movement​

When Alana started a website for lonely people struggling to find love, she had no idea where it would lead.​

Alana's project had nothing to do with harming women, attacking women's rights, enforcing entitlement to sex and/or other harms to women, or even division amongst the sexes; it was about one woman's personal experience with dating which she described with the term "Involuntary Celibacy." The term Incel came about when the XY movement stole Alana's female personal experience. In 2018 Alana stated that:
"Angry men have highjacked my word as a weapon of war," as reported by The Guardian (UK) newspaper in their article here.

Incel ideology: the violence against women manifesto — what does research tell us?​

In response to my last essay, The Incel Wake-Up Call Netflix Gave Us (2025), there were some very interesting viewpoints posted in the comment section, letting us know that "Incels are not violent; they are just not having sex." When we hear this kind of deflecting narrative from males, it could be argued that women need to remember that following their narratives is how we got into this mess of patriarchy's oppression in the first place, via narratives men have used for centuries in religion — telling us men are above women — and also by listening to men telling us what our essential nature as a woman is, and what our place in the world is. Before we listen, critical thinking can help us make judgements for ourselves.
In your own view as a woman reading this, what evidence has been presented to show that it's likely that Incels are not violent, and don't have a hatred for women that could lead them to be violent? Not much, I would assume. On the other hand, what evidence have you seen that does support the idea that Incels are violent? Lots — as there've been multiple incidents of femicide by incels reported in the news. If an Incel has not been violent yet, they have a great potential to be. If not violent towards women, certainly towards themselves by taking their own lives, because this is what the research shows.
Why? — violence towards women is part of the Incel manifesto on the management, attraction, and retention of, and access to, those of us who identify as women — the "Stacys" they desire. Based on this one fact, thinking about this more deeply, if we consider what they are after from us, and how they believe it should be achieved, The Report as mentioned earlier cites rape as a method in their findings. Based on this finding, ask yourself: why would Incels not be violent or at least have the potential to be? Violence against women to gain access to us is part of their manifesto.
For Incels, when they commit acts of violence against women (the ones that make it to the headlines), there is always and I mean always a trail of evidence that takes us back to their life experiences as an Incel, and their praise of and association with the XY movement of Incel's violence against women. Look at the 140 page manifesto from one of the most notorious Incels, Elliot Rodger, which he emailed to his family before he set out to attack and "punish" women in 2014.
In a separate essay I have written titled, The Godfathers of The XY Incel Movement, I've made reference to Elliot Rodger et al. and their violence and advocacy for it, whom it could be argued Incels have taken inspiration from to form their underground manifesto for the management of and access to women, if we don't willingly give it to them.
If you, I, Sis over there, and the world can make these links between the XY Incel ideology and crimes against women so easily, by looking at the case studies of Incels that make the headlines, the argument with the general male population (whether they are Incel or not) over whether Incels are violent or not should stop right here — they are violent. Or if they're not violent yet, they are being groomed to be.
Facts are facts, and their own ideology encourages violence.

Women's understanding must increase: the black pill, a nuanced Incel ideology on the rise​

In this first short report on exposing the Incel ideology and mindset, women need to be aware of a new subculture of Incel ideology on the rise. According to B. Sparks et al., the Black Pill is a thing as of right now.
They directed me to research that Speckhard A., Ellenberg M., and Morton J. carried out, which is one of the largest studies into the Incel's movement, behaviour, ideology, and online forum postings. Their study Involuntary celibates' experiences of and grievance over sexual exclusion and the potential threat of violence among those active in an online incel forum, also has a big focus on the rise in Black Pill ideology. Speckhard et al. assert in a summary about their research findings that:

"The present study of over 250 self-identified incels demonstrates that although the majority of incels are non-violent and do not approve of violence, those who consider themselves to be staunch misogynists are likely to endorse a desire to commit violence and are also likely to become more misogynistic through participation on incel web forums, which validate their views."

What is Black Pill Ideology?​

According to The Report, which led me to Speckhard et al.'s in depth questioning of 312 Incels about the Black Pill ideology:

"It is similar in many ways to the tenets of the RedPill perspective with the added caveat that one cannot transcend the boundaries of the looks-based hierarchy. Incels will remain incels, normies will remain normies. If the Red Pill ideology is seen as pessimistic, then the BlackPill is its nihilistic successor that promises no hopes of upward mobility unless the looks-based hierarchy collapses and a new (patriarchal) order is established. A recent survey indicated that roughly 95% of incels believe in the Black Pill. — The Report (p. 733)

What the Black Pill means for women​

Women globally need to be aware that the Black Pill Movement is largely about forgetting "Chad" aka other men, and their advantage over Incels when it comes to us women. Instead, they aim to focus on us only, after Chad's reduced importance by using "patriarchal rule" (again). I say again because if we look at what history shows us prior to women's rights and society as we know it now, that's exactly what our foremothers had — patriarchal dominance over their lives.

Black Pill survey results​

When Speckhard et al. questioned 312 respondents (who identified as an Incel) in their survey about the subculture of the Black Pill, they found that:

• 66.2% of men agreed with the statement, "Equality between men and women has not been good for me."
• 68% of men agreed that, "Feminism is responsible for the state of relationships today."

These two bits of research-based evidence show how more than half of the men who responded felt, and possibly still feel. This evidence shows us that they will be after our liberties and freedoms as women, and believe equality should no longer be an option for women. Women must wake up, and push back in high numbers against this. We must place down the groundwork for younger women to take the reins, after those of us who consider ourselves as defenders of women, children, and the disabled are no longer here, just in case future generations of women are under attack with some new Incel ideology.

How do Black Pill men feel about women?​

When asked about how they feel about women in particular, the sexual rejection they experience, and the anger that they have, of the 312 respondents, Speckford et al. found that:

• 76% of men strongly agreed that women "are self-centered."
• 86% of men strongly agreed that women are, "always looking for something better to come along."
• 71% of men strongly agreed that women, "only care about appearances when considering male partners."

What women can take from these Black Pill responses​

What these responses show is that Incel men feel very entitled, which we already did know, but this is just confirmation. Imagine, you're "self- centered" because you don't find a man attractive or don't have a connection with them. Now add to this the other finding in Speckhard et al.'s research that just over 50% (not a lot, really) of these men felt that, "personality was important in relationships." The latter is key, as I responded to a comment on a previous essay to this effect, before reading this research paper.
Women need to remember: when we "needed'' men to live life there was never any requirement for them to be a nice person, or have a good character. They could beat us, rape us, exploit us, and never consider who they are as men in relation to us.
Incel's want to return to this age and understanding of the world. Logically, if only 57% of them agreed that personality is important in relationships they have with us , that would lead you to believe they hold outdated beliefs on why, how, and under what conditions women should "just want them." These beliefs were held by men before women's liberation. There was no focus on their character because they never had to focus on it in order for women to find them of value, or engage with them.

The problem Incels and the male population face now​

What men are faced with now, in the light of women's rights and our liberation, is a need to attract us via their character, but many men are not focused on being attractive in this manner, and which to obtain what they want — sex and access to women — without effort.
Psychology Today found in their research The Rise of The Lonely Single Male (2022), that men are struggling with the character part big time and that's why women are turning away from them. In response to their "struggles," Incels would rather blame your rights, my rights, and the rights of Sis over there and our ability to say "no" to them for their loneliness. That's why they "need" a movement to force us to give them access to us with their new Black Pill rebranding of the current Incel and Red Pill madness.
In conclusion, for the sake of trying to keep this first report on evidence- based research into the Incel community somewhat short, we now are 100% sure that:

• Involuntary Celibacy didn't start as a male movement designed to harm women
• Men have taken it on themselves with no encouragement from anyone else to make it a movement about harming women in response to their (male) loneliness
• Incels would rather force women to accept them "as is" than do the work on their character that's required to genuinely attract women

We also know that there have been multiple murders of women by involuntary celibate males who cite Incel ideology.
Finally, we are aware of a new rebranding of the Red Pill and Incel ideology as the Black Pill, which has divorced itself from jealousy over "Chad" and his success with women, and replaced that with attacking women's liberation and rights. We also know that millions of men are a part of the Incel movement.
The better we understand the inner world of these men, the better women can advocate for themselves.

Well, I’d argue that what women (and indeed all of us) need to know to be safe is that we can identify and trust our guts on shady people. But all this messaging from government is the wrong stuff. It’s MUCH more important for safety to have two things;
- Situational awreness
