It's strange, while both have libertarian tendencies Massie in the past at least seemed accepting of tariffs. I don't know if he has changed his stance or not. Maybe he is fine with tariffs but wants lower taxes?

I think he sees tariffs as a less evil form of taxation, but doesn't buy into the protectionist arguments about industry and trade balances and such. There's also the fact that the tariffs were raised before anything else was lowered, meaning it's just a massive tax increase at the moment.

R/economics is having a stroke trying to spin this whole situation
Economics is weird because every economist quoted in the media seems to have never paid attention in any of their classes. It's the only field I can think of where the vast majority of academics are completely and utterly incompetent. If they had paid attention, they would have learned that while a trade deficit with any one country is not necessarily a bad thing (if they produce something you need/want and can't make yourself, for example), it is also true that net trade deficit with all countries is bad because overall, wealth is leaving your country.

I can't believe I'm seeing a party flip in my lifetime, reps are becoming pro worker and dems are becoming pro business. How does your seething hatred of 1 man make you throw away the ideals you've had developed for decades.
Democrats weren't pro-worker even since Clinton became president. Really from 1980-2015 we just let the workers get fucked over by free trade, increased financialization of the economy, mass immigration, and increasing wealth inequality. It took a billionaire wrestler to make pro-labor politics hip again.

So trump is going to start finding illegals 1000 dollars per day that they remain in the US.

Spic reddit's response?

AY CARAMBA.
THEYRE TACOCAUSTING US!!!!
To be a Redditor is to be a lesser being than any that walks the Earth. I think along with the wonderful idea of marking the heads of illegals like the Redditor says we should also have a mark for those with a Reddit account. They must be known, and they must feel shame.

Pro-tariff politics aren't exactly totally pro-labor in the traditional sense (they are by modern American political standards) but we'll see how Trump interacts with unions.

Pro tariff probably just means American industry first. Pro worker for like health care, pension, nah.

Still, it may not be perfect, but it's better than NOTHING.
