The nonpolitical skins came to prefer Doc Martens (after a period of just wearing any kind of heavy boot), but the political skins who engaged in violence, whether racist skinheads or SHARPs, that is, the anti-racist skinheads, often would prefer steel-toed boots for obvious reasons.

However, as police increasingly viewed these kinds of boots as weapons and prosecuted accordingly when skins would kick the shit out of someone while wearing them, there was a trend away from that to avoid lengthy prison terms.
