Frankly I don't trust any mental health provider system to work very well, especially not for people who would be put into it against their will. Therapy doesn't work unless the person getting the therapy wants to get better, and a lot of people in these sort of mental states don't or firmly believe that they can't. Not to mention, if we're going to lock up every suicidal person, there simply will not be enough men in white coats to deal with them, and they certainly would not be getting the attention and care that they need to get better. They'd get fed pills instead of actually addressing their individual problems and finding ways to deal with them, and that only makes things worse.

People in these subcultures are usually young and from rough backgrounds, and they live in societies and communities that don't care about them. Some grow out of it and learn how to function, and others end up never getting better and either die or continue the cycle of broken homes with their own kids. There's just too many factors at play for each person for "just throw them in the looney bin" to be a reasonable solution.

A truck driver wanted in connection with a previous shooting incident was killed in an officer-involved shooting at a truck stop in Carroll County, Virginia.

Shortly before 2 p.m. on March 28, 2025, police responded to a shooting on southbound I-85 at mile marker 131 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The shooting involved two tractor trailer drivers. One of the drivers was identified as Edmond Johnson, 29, of Louisiana. The other truck driver was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

According to the Greensboro Police Department (GPD), after the I-85 shooting, Johnson fled the scene and drove to Carroll County, Virginia.

Virginia State Police described the circumstances leading to a shootout with police at a Love’s truck stop in Carroll County:

“The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Love’s Truck Stop in the Lamsburg area off Interstate 77, Exit 1, in Carroll County after receiving information that a suspect who was wanted in Maryland, and also reportedly involved in a shooting in Greensboro, North Carolina, was at the truck stop. The suspect was located in a tractor-trailer truck. When he eventually exited the tractor-trailer, he exchanged gunfire with the deputies. During the gunfire exchange, two deputies were shot as well as the suspect.“

Johnson died from injuries sustained during the shooting.

The two Carroll County deputies were hospitalized and are listed in stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation.

To my knowledge, ganguro fashion (and especially yamamba gyaru like you posted) hasn't really been in style for around 20 years now. Menhera ("mental healther") and Jirai-onna ("landmine girl") are the more modern trends for Japanese girls, both of which tend to involve drug abuse and the latter of which often includes piercings. The closest western comparison I could make for either might be certain types of goth or emo, though they're more focused on cutesiness alongside the edginess.

The girl in the video seems like she's in that sort of "I hate myself but I'm cute" type of subculture that's more popular these days, especially with mentally ill young women. You can get a pretty good idea of what these types of girls are like just by searching #メンヘラ or #地雷女 on Xitter, or the jirai onna tag on tumblr to see how it's been adopted by westerners. You get a lot of girls posting memes about wanting to kill themselves, cutesy highly filtered selfies, pictures of self harm, and nudes or risqué photos. It's a subculture of mentally ill girls in their teens and 20s who do drugs, have a lot of casual sex, and hurt or kill themselves like the girl in the video.

You are correct, this girl is was a Jirai-onna/"landmine girl". They dress/talk cutesy but do the semi-self-harm shit like piercings and actual self harm stuff like cutting. They are called landmine because they will often be a normal, if overly 'cutesy', girl until something sets them off then they will go full psycho hose beast and/or suicidal. "Completely safe until BOOM" - Landmine. The clothing style to someone from US/EU can be described as an blend of Bubble Goth and Cottage Core. That outfit she has on in the video is very much in line with the fashion, though its a little more... out there than would be worn for daily wear - like goths have their day-to-day and then what they wear to Goth/Industrial night at the club, and her outfit is the latter.

This is not mutually exclusive with menhera (which is more of mental attitude and less of a clothing style, though there is a national stereotype of the typical Menhera girl). A better translation is "love sick girl" and is basically a girl who is overly attached to a guy. More than just a stage 12 clinger, this is the girl who through a mix of mental health and "learned helplessness" cannot function if they are 'ignored' (i.e. their 10,000 text messages per day aren't read and responded to in 30 seconds).
In fact most Landmines are Menheras and that clinginess is what makes them explode.

The real issue with the "fashion" is it 'romanticizes' mental illness so girls who aren't completely batshit will deliberately suppress their mental resilance and turn anything in to a cause to flip out and threaten suicide.

Basically think emo girls with a fashion based on cutesy interpretations of 1950s Housewives and the mental illness idolization turned to 11.

Girl in the video is perfect-storm combination of Menhera/Landmine where the guy she likes isn't responding enough to her seeking attention and due to a combination of being young & dumb, actual mental illness, and social circle discouraging healthy thought patterns/encouraging her to embrace her self-destructive behaviors for attention, ends up suiciding.

This girl had pills, she just wasn't taking them. I'm also just going say that while I agree with your sentiment, letting "mental health councilers" have access to kids is how we ended up with troons and pooners infesting highschools.

There are whole books on Ganguro Gyaru and japanese society but:
1) Japanese society at large agrees with you. The Paler skin = the more attractive is the general societal view.
2) That is the whole point of the aesthetic which is, effectively, to dress like a slut but make your face/physical appearance completely off-putting to the average Japanese salaryman. The original impetus was highschool/college girls sharing ways to make themselves unappealing to train gropers without needing to compromise their fashion.
Unfortunately these girls underestimated the tenacity of the average Jap when it comes to fapping to anything in view, and thus Ganguro/Manba became its own fetish.
But also in general... Japanese authorities cracking down on pervs on trains have reduced the need to look like a complete alien, so the style mostly died out - either subsumed back into parent Gyaru subculture or subdued. Or as a 'costume' worn to "90's night".

no. Ganguro was/is a subtype/out growth of Gyaru. Ganguro basically just means "darker-toned skin" so Ganguro has shifted to just mean tan. The more "unique" aspects of Ganguro (the "panda" effect, some of the accessory choices) split into Manba and is now mostly used.... not so much ironically but performatively. There's been a morph of the style to Banba where the spray tan is much less obvious/heavy.

Also, this video reminded me of a very common phenomenon in Japan (that there probably aren't any videos of ) where older children (like in their 50's or 60's) kill their very elderly parents they live with. I remember one where a guy killed his dad because he got the wrong kind of teriyaki skewers.
