PTSD has a series of criteria for diagnosis that people don't always fit and a treatment plan that might not work for individual cases. Decent psychiatrists take a "less is more" approach because they don't want to misdiagnose someone who then receives incorrect treatment. It could be that a depression or generalized anxiety diagnosis is more accurate for a given case, but I do not know the ins and outs of the person you're talking about. I'm just giving my armchair opinion.

Some statins are overprescribed and their side effects are sometimes ignored as an "ends justify the means" thing, but they do work and not everyone has side effects. I think there’s some malice as well. As a kid, my mother had me “diagnosed” with autism so she could get more free money from the state. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I was able to get retested and it was determined that I wasn’t autistic. I would bet that if they didn’t cash awards for people with autistic children, the diagnoses would go down
