I don't know about aspergers (that might be primarily social) but there is plenty of evidence that autism is a neuro developmental disorder.
I don't think it's primarily genetic either because there's a strong factor on signals like parental age (which might be a proxy for parental health because people in America tend to decline in health rapidly with age), gestational diabetes, and maternal inflammation during gestation.
It is likely the uptick in autism is primarily due to declining health of the population at large. An unhealthy mother during conception and pregnancy can really fuck a baby up and set them up to fail.
From pregnancy through the first year is where a lot of infant brain development happens. So it's no surprise that maternal health would be a massive factor.
If RFK Jr is successful in improving metabolic health substantially, or if metabolic health screening (and proper advice not just calorie restriction which often doesn't fix core issues caused by processed foods) became the norm during fertility and pregnancy consults, I wouldn't be surprised if genuine cases dropped in the years and decades after.
Edit: In terms of proscription metabolic therapies are effective in children and adults with autism. It is not a cure but it decreases the negative symptoms and makes them more functional. More functional means they can contribute to society by keeping a job and living independently instead of becoming another social leech on gibs.
