or is there some deep guidelines and series of questions and/or self-reflective journey they go through to decide which fur they are?

Have a friend who has a whole essay in her head on this subject. Her opinion was, if you were to take a large percentage of furries and graph their fursonas, along with their interests and personality traits, you start to see patterns between what kinds of people pick what kinds of animals. Then calculate in an error rate for the people who only think with their dicks (her opinion was that this really wouldn't skew the results much, in the long run, and a more useful version of the same dataset would be "are they into/prone to and/or good/bad at roleplay of any flavor"), people who just follow the current trend (which could account for a high percentage if it's something well known like FNAF or virtually no solid number if it's just some specific thing of the moment) and the fandoms tendency to shoehorn in singular traits, like having two tails or a skull face (this would likely need to be a whole separate graph due to the idiotically high number of things we're talking about here).

Supposedly this is another reason why synth species, and protogen specifically, are seen as normie picks. It's the quick, easy option that requires little work. Just 'animal what has a helmet' and you're done, like picking the default in everything on the character creation screen. For that, I can see how it checks out. I know a couple people who sport protogen avatars, but aren't furries and refuse to interact with anything furry. "It's a neat robot guy, that's it." to quote one.
