The malware in TS4 CC strikes again, and this version of it doesn't even need the game to be running to do its thing since the .zip files were replaced with an .exe file, which SHOULD already be a massive red flag to run the fuck away, but Simmers aren't usually computer literate and will fall for it:

I dunno a lot of people seems to still fall for Discord scams and get hacked still.

Something I noticed, while Sims 1-3 tone were a lot more darker than 4, with many pre-made families implicated in murder and incest and the artstyle was a lot grungier. Sims 4 seems to have a lot more mods that add 'real life' style violence and depravity e.g. Real life politics, or trying to simulate real life crime or culture or traits that are just DSM diagnoses rather than 'personality', sex mods are a lot more detailed and have more weird fetishes.

Of course old games had their teen pregnancy mod, rape mod, kinky sex animation coomer mods and sim-killing mods but they are not as 'detailed' as to refer to specific real life things as much. Just mods to allow you to do something you can't in the game rather than to replicate real life popular culture perfectly. Even the humour of the vanilla game seemed to refer to real social media trends as well (just a lot more kiddy and sanitised).

I wonder what is the reason? Mind you I wasn't part of the modding community back then either and just found out there's a lot of stupid drama, but even then the mods were fairly tame.

Paging @Thiletonomics for the history here

The people who create and use the depraved mods like reenacting in the game some of the dark aspects of real life (like drugs, violence, incest, teen pregnancy), but don't understand the kind of players who build a sim replica of Auschwitz or something are following their same logic. So they throw a fit when they see the gypsy sims or the nazi tattoos.

WARNING: The following post contains a SHIT ton of SHIT NO ONE CARES ABOUT, if you don't give two shits, leave behind a semper fi react. Or just direct yourself to disagree with the post!
Yes, while what you said in that regard is correct 1-3 was darker, I'd have to say the darkest Sims game was easily Sims 2. Sims 3 being next and Sims 1 being dead last, as Sims 1's only scariest quality was the Burglar and Fire Music. Sims was originally doomed to fail and be cancelled as no one was interested in a "Girls Game" since at the time it was a Dollhouse Simulator (Which is what Sims 4 is now.) the reason why I put Sims 2 as the darkest is for two reasons.

  1. The Sims 2 consistently has great storytelling
  2. The consistent storytelling keeps GameTheory and other Theorists on their edge of their toes.
The Sims 2, while a PC game actually has several console adaptations. Mainly around the DS games, and surprisingly for PlayStation Portable.

The following games are:
  • Sims 2 - PC
  • Sims 2 - DS (Non-canon tied to the Gameboy Advanced version, yes there's a GBA version.)
  • Sims 2 - GBA
  • Sims 2 - PSP
  • Sims 2 Pets - DS
  • Sims 2 - PS3/PS2
  • Sims 2 Pets - PS2/PS3
  • Sims 2 Apartment Pets - DS
I am sure there's a lot more but those is what I can remember, we're focusing more on Sims 2 for the PSP and PC.

Sims 2 had several instances of implied inbreeding (By accident, or by purpose. With the Curious Family,) StrangeTown as it's name suggests is actually strange (No shit.) its the most popular hood in Sims 2 with several conspiracies. Starting with The Curious-Smith Household.

The Smith-Curious Household
The Smiths consists of Jenny Smith, Pollination Technician #9 Smith and their two children. Jenny actually is the relative of the Curious' having been taken away by CPS (Because this game deletes household members after a kid is taken, Jenny has no memory or relationships to the Curious family.) She's married to the now retired 9th PT of Strangetown, which isn't all that crazy or weird until you find out that PT was the pollinator that was kidnapped by Pascal and their father which led to the creation of Lo and Chloe. Jenny married him which makes the family tree awkward.

The Spector Household
Probably well known, Ophelia Nigmos and Olive Spector are two sims residing in that house, Olive is the aunt of Ophelia and has a few secrets of her own. Years ago Grim Reaper and Olive had an offspring named Nervous Subject (Powerlevel: Nyon Specter) just like with Jenny, Nervous was taken and given to the Beakers (Who also have history with the Curious') Olive has a backyard with several graves, some of which have intriguing names such as Earl E. Demise (Early Demise) or Rigger Mortis. Her current Fiancé in the Sims 4 is named Lyne Coffin (Lay In Coffin.)

There's also a random gravestone that has no attachment to Olive other than that it was a delivery man that died on her property. It's implied she killed her husbands (+ the Delivery Guy.) with the proper assumption making that she wants to see Grim again.

The Beaker Household
The Beaker Household consists of Loki, Circe and Nervous Subject, Loki and Circe Beaker are Mad Scientists having done tested on Nyon for whatever reason, we wouldn't know. Circe was also dating Vidcund Curious but a memory suggests that Vidcund pissed himself and was embarrassed by that and the two split up. Correlation, not causation.

The Goth, Lothario and Caliente Families
Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries and scandals in the franchise to date, here's the darkest one imo. It all started with Bella Goth. Bella Bachelor married Mortimer Goth and took his last name, Bella and Morty had sired two children Cassandra and Alexander. Pre-Abduction, Don Lothario, the towns biggest sleeze was sleeping around with the Caliente's and was due to wed Cassandra. But there's a problem, the Caliente's wanted money and they realized they couldn't get that with Bella in the way. The last person to see Bella before her disappearance was Don, despite the fandom thinking that the Bella in StrangeTown is Bella, it's debunked as that Bella was a coder oversight. Bella Goth is actually dead (Hence the Dead Token.). Two splinters of the Sims Franchise that support the theory (Despite falling out of the Canon of the Series.) are PSP and Sims Social a now defunct Social Game hosted on BoomerBook.

It was clear that Nina and Dina Caliente only wanted to marry Mortimer for the money as their aspiration and family info suggests that (And if left alone will end up Marrying Mortimer and producing a child possibly.) as for Cassandra, Don left her at the aisle at the beginning of the game.

Now onto the PSP port.

PSP
The PSP version of the game kinda follows the DS version at least the beginning as you break down in StrangeTown and decided to get your car checked. Only for the entirety of the building to disappear leaving you broke and homeless in StrangeTown but fear not, Bella Goth (Who was sperging out about MUH ALIENS.) offers you her house which is haunted (You can cheat the system by buying a bunch of shit and buying the house at 0$ or 1$ scamming Bella. Which isn't really much as you realize that house ain't worth shit.) Bella's sperging about the Ghosts weren't wrong as there's 3 confirmed ghosts Four once you finished helping the Ghosts Move On, and the Maid tells you it's her. so, the only one I would be discussing right now is The Curious' and The Second Ghost.

The Second Ghost, a man who died by drowning occupies the Music Room, his name was Dennis Phillips was revealed to be killed by his Ex-Wife Hazel Dente. You find this out after you (unqualified) check out around the pool and found his shirt while also finding a note that said "Help me she's trying to [sic] kill me / starve me." (can't remember which.) being hard to intimidate she actually does give in and admitted to murder, (even she murdered her other partners.) she was said to be inspired by Nacy Hazel apparently. (Which isn't uncommon as The Sims Team tends to do callbacks and references, such as Supernatural, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Bewitched, Twilight, Folkore, and Into The Future to name a few.)

Lastly, The Curious' Pascal's son Tyco was sold to Vidcund, that's all.

TD;DR: Sims 2 is most certainly the darkest of the bunch.

Yeah, I agree, Sims 2 storytelling was unmatched, especially with PSP continuation of Strangetown stuff. Back when I was young, I summoned Bella with cheat in Pleasantville and she was dripping with water and when i returned to the game the next day it said that she died - that's spooky. Twinbrook of Sims 3 is kind of fucked too, but due to open world system it couldn't play out the scripted storyline like 2.

But my question was more about mods and community, while old games were 'darker' (in more mysterious and seedy ways) - Why is Sims 4 the ones that are getting these ridiculous mods that these old titles didn't get back in the day? The sort of things where people can act out weird fetish and real life crime scene.

Sims 3 had a Mod Similar to Devious Desires (If you managed to look at the download post of it.) it credits a Mod in the Sims 3 called "Kinky World" made by not Oniki it's OniKay. But to answer your question is, many of the people became delusional or even became Weens to the Sims 4 to the point instead of switching back to Sims 2 or Sims 3, they much rather play a current installment (Since people have this idea of "Muh Current Game better than old ooga booga software.") Sims 4 is the recent game, meaning good graphics (Even tho it's worse than Sims 1.) and new features (That are still ass.) because of their rampent denial of how shitty the game is, they need to download one gargotrillion Mods to simulate how to cook an egg on the stove,

Nevermind the fact you bought all the packs (If you did you're a retard, go look for A.) because who needs mods when you can spend 1000$ content that was PUT in previous packs in the previous instilments. So to answer your question, people want REALISM. ATF wants to goon because they're predators and shit. If someone wants to install a "CHILD UNLOCK FOR WICKED WHIMS" "CANNIBAL AND FUCK DEAD CORPSES" or "SEX WITH DOGS" Mod then I am gonna assume you have BAD intentions, 3D isn't too far off from the real thing.

I know about the Kinky World, and now there's a gun mod and drug dealing mod for 3 (that's made post-4 and it's very '4' in 'current day' tone), but that's still pretty tame compared to the general content people push out in 4, Sims 4 seems to have a lot more NSFW content and insane mods we're seeing here in this thread. That kind of REALISM obsession wasn't that bad compared to now

Normally I'd rate a post like this autistic but it is actually really informative... because despite being the creator of this thread I only ever played the Sims 1 (and maybe 2, I can't remember) very casually and just found the modding community surrounding it to be entertaining and bizarre. I had no idea how deep the game's lore went.

Jenny actually is the relative of the Curious' having been taken away by CPS (Because this game deletes household members after a kid is taken, Jenny has no memory or relationships to the Curious family.)
What the fuck are you talking about? This is not true. Unless you are confusing the alien half-sisters and Jenny...

Don't go merging 2 with 4, they were made as "different timelines" until some staff got confused and started getting "the heavy loreing™" as messy as 4's coding and making it about "Calientes and time travel making parallel universes n shiet".

Ah! Yeah, I am VERY autistic with my information, most are actually on the Wikia and it's perferred you play in a specific Order in the Sims 2, for each hood, I can't remember which but I am pretty sure in PleasantView you play the Goths first then the Caliente's next. The real reason why Sims 2 was well done, was because of Will Wright, even though the game has his own ref and even his own Sim (iirc) and they constantly suck him off, you gotta give it to him Sims 2 is the only game in the series with Hair Physics, Couch/Bed Physics, Realistic Car Physics (The only game to ever feature a car drive out the driveway though it's a loading screen, Sims 3 just half asses it and teleports the car in the front of the lot and the sim comes out, but Generations can teach a teen to drive, Sims 4 still waiting on cars which I do not have faith for only because of Horse Ranch.) Realistic Cooking (I.E. Making the food and opening the counters, etc), shopping and ordering and other shit no one cares about, while also being the last in the franchise to do it.

While the games a buggy mess you can appreciate the cozy vibe given, sad I was born in the year it was released in and only grew up with Sims 3 before recently playing Sims 2 (First after buying Super Collection for 2.) and using abandonware sites to get the UC for my PC (Which incidentally, is now removed cuz EA repackaged the game and fucked up. Though, while clearing my SDD/HD second one after trying to release space after installing shit from gaming sites. I found out I kept Mr. DJ's Repacks folder and I am trying to torrent the copy since it's the only EXISITING copy I have left after DCMA's from EA. So that's that. so you can see why I am autistic about the game, it's sorta a guilty pleasure of mine to indulge, MatPat covered a few videos about it as with the Lore Centered SimsTuber The Sims Lore, as with another youtuber I cannot remember the name of (Some Pajeet who makes Did You Know Videos.) if you have any questions about the sims I might might have an answer to it.

>Jenny has no memories nor relationships of the Curious family
>Shows Jenny DOES have memories of her younger brothers and parents
>No you are wrong lel

???????? GOD you are dense. I don't need your copy, I have mine right here.
PT9 abducted Glarn who had alien twins, abandoned them with Glabe who raised them alone and probably didn't tell them of their origins, Glarn remarried and had 4 more children, the oldest meets and marries PT9 without knowing of her older half-sisters, because Glarn probably never said anything to his second wife and family and PT9 doesn't have memories prior to meeting Jenny (an alien colony thing?), so he probably doesn't even know those twins exist. It's not that hard...

I thought Jenny was taken away from her family, huh. I remember specifically that was the case. Maybe it was some other family.

My first game was 1 and I pretty much grew up with 2 and I would agree with you that 2 is probably the best in the series when it comes to attention to detail. Although the car bit in 3 is understandable because due to the open world map of the game and the way you can place lot that is not connected to the road, it's probably much harder to do the driving animation like 2.

There are some disappointing bits with 3 though (but it's my main game because I actually like the open world, and many mods today made it quite playable - this town was so well made, although there are a lot of buggy bit with alien genetics), expansions are generally redundant and don't play well together (Showtime is a the one where it feels like a cashgrab that should've played well with Late Night but doesn't), and less complicated relationship system compared to 2... I also disliked how they decided to introduce time travel in ambitions and eventually made a pack around it and decided to stop caring about the lore with Don Lothario teleporting into Riverview in such (and Bella story never gets concluded), but as gameplay itself it isn't that bad... But it's a bitch to mod and there's barely any deep gameplay mods for it.

Strangetown story is indeed a wasted potential. Though I'm a bit less into Bella disappearance and more about extrapolating the lore now.
