4chan hasn't been like this in forever. Ever since Tumblr raided it over a decade ago it's just been a porn site, but lamer. The days of "final boss of the Internet" left many, many years ago.

It was /r/4chan making green text posts viral and Reddit tourists coming to the site looking for more of that ruined it. Tumblr really had nothing to do with it. It was a multitude of factors really. Reddit tourists, the 2016 election, smart phones enabling low quality phone posters, tranny jannies...

8chan dying still pisses me off so much. 8chan in its beginning (ie when people started actually using it) was fantastic. Great discussions, lots of big names actually posting there every now and then, it was so lively and great. I'd kill to have those days back.

It wasn’t always like that. But it’s been that way for quite a while because 4chan is a boomer website now.

It was only the 2003-2006 era that /b/ was anything resembling good. But a lot of it was rose-tinted glasses, because only the good threads got archived/reposted. After 2006, it was primarily dick-posting, with some other porn and shitposting scattered throughout, and a couple good threads every once in a blue moon. CP-spam was also a common occurrence before moot finally decided to spend months trying out captcha systems, post-timeouts, and other methods of preventing the spam, but that wasn't until 2009.
