Mass Effect Andromeda: Shitstorm Edition - RIP Biowear

Het alert! Het alert! Apparently a black male character is straight and that's worse than Hitler.

Feels like they were gloating about Blizzard confirming Tracer to be gay just yesterday.

I think it says something about this game's writing and its audience when 1) a heterosexual character is a statistical minority and 2) people are still outraged by it.

There's no logical end to these complaints. Even if every character was a gay transgender abbo, they'd be outraged that bisexual half-black half-Chinese men aren't being represented. You could make sentient, colourless cubes with no personal identity and there would still be a problem. Not developer (not even Bioware) sincerely wants to lose all their creative freedom by surrendering to every asinine demand made by angry people on the internet, but boy are they are getting there.

This thread has made me sad.

I really want ME:A to be a good game. I've been a hardcore ME fan from the start.

I look at everything in this thread, and I am having a crisis of faith.

The worst thing is that all the gripes, snipes and general points of taking the piss appear to have merit.

Fuck.

Look at it this way, Dangerous: Mass Effect was good. And it ended. It's over.

With that in mind, you can look at Andromeda the same way you look at the Star Wars prequels: it has little to do with the better work it's based off.

I think you should'nt have high hopes for Andromeda. Just look at ME3, DA 2/Cisquisition and SW:TOR and it will tell you what to expect of Andromeda.

ME is effectively dead. It has people who don't care at all about it making it, a publisher once more milking the remains of a good franchise with no care for quality, kept only the most incompetent people who had anything to do with the originals and is basically a soft core porn soap opera at this point with the same level of quality in looks and writing.

The games from the trilogy aren't coming back. EA doesn't care and Bioware sure as fuck don't. It will still sell shitloads on MEs corpse though.

Scratch that, thats DA:O that was tedious, 1 i the game i dont really remember much of.

I know this isn't a DA thread but by god I'll take any chance I can get to bitch about how bad DA:O's combat was. What the fuck were they thinking? ME1 by comparison was just simple: Not too much side content, basic story, rough-around-the-edges gameplay.

I think thats kinda the way thing has been across the board in the Western Game Development front. The Division recently did what ME3 Multiplayer did, and people are now leaving the game, on top of banning the word"gamergate" in chat which was just bizarrely hilarious. Except maybe Blizzard, but I think that was due to Overwatch being a big hit for people who yearned for that TF2 feel.

Now it almost seems like a Japanese resurgence, you've got Japanese games and it's spin offs coming to PC, as well as some console ports. Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown for old school beatem up/RPG style stuff, as well as many others. Hell, even that new Senran Kagura Beach Splash looks interesting, instead of the typical gory blow peoples heads off, you just hit them with super soakers.

This is because the market is changing rapidly for Japan, and has been over the past five-six years or so.

The fact is they're seeing the same costs rise and issues in gaming and other media as everyone else and their end response is to export, export, export. This means that stuff they'd have kept very Japanese gets dialed down (but only minimally) in order to ensure it finds an audience elsewhere in the wider world. For now this hasn't led to any real reduction in writing quality because a lot of these studios haven't had to expand to meet demand, and with the additional money exports are bringing in, they won't particularly need to risk output for extra shekels.

You only have to look at the runaway successes of stuff like "set in Europe" productions from Japan as of late and more generic "Western" settings of games and you start to produce a universal product that could be sold from Kyoto to Kracow.

Another factor to consider as well is that "David Lynch" attitude is quite wide in gaming, especially in the West. The reason why is because when it works you get fantastic successes under your belt.

Bethesda and its subdivisions still retain that attitude of making what they want to play a reality and it works out well for them but the majority of their top tier flight are old school gamers with careful control of the people below them thanks to Pete Hines murderously efficient PR operation.

You only need to look at successes like WOLFENSTEIN: The New Order (and it's DLC/game The Old Blood) and Doom to see that. They managed to unfuck those two gaming franchises after iD tried their best to smother them in the modern era with a pair of frankly shit sequels.

CD Projekt Red cheerfully delays and otherwise sits on projects because they'd prefer them to be games they can be proud of releasing and have fun playing themselves, this again is a good attitude to take, especially as they've now created interest in the Witcher books in turn. Blood and Wine was insane as a DLC and effectively dumped an entire sequel on you with a cheerful smile and a thank you from the Devs. Cyberpunk 2077 was announced some five years ago before they chose to step back from trying to make two things at once (as most studios do) and currently has a release date window of "2017-2021". There's an entire army of people now patiently waiting for the next thing CD Projekt Red puts out and will be there on day one come what may.

When it works, it works.

The problem is when you let the writers lead at all costs rather than having them work hand in glove with the rest of the studio. This is where Bioware is dying on its arse as EA's designated "Story driven" studio. On top of that, the writers are frankly not that good. And strike me more as English-Lit failures and fanfic tier plebs than passionate people. It doesn't surprise me at all when you have management who don't give a fuck because of all the dangerhairs who get offended and dramatic over the drop of a fucking hat. This is what's happened to ME:A because all the old writers have already been given the boot or moved on to better studios or made their killing and moved on.

This is so well worded and what I've been trying to explain to colleagues about Bioware's current failures and why they continue to fail. Writers don't necessarily need to be game designers (or even have a game design degree) but they do need to work alongside the game designers and artists because at the end of the day, you aren't writing a novel, you are writing a GAME and the mediums are two vastly different in terms of what your narrative needs to be. DA:I had a lot of issues with 'tell not show' which is strike one for bad storytelling in games. You don't need to tell me again and again how utterly evil someone is - you need to show me first and foremost.

I'd say the problem is everyone wants to be muttered in the same breath as people like Hideo Kojima, or Ken Levine when it comes to being able to tell a story. Every idiot with a notepad and storyline wants to be the next visionary and way too many of them already act like they are.

The issue being is that one has a background in film, but came to the world of video games by happenstance and took to it well, and the other knew how to tell a story through heavy visuals and game mechanics. Both of these methods are far more difficult than people frequently realize and this is enhanced enormously when it comes to games. We live in a fortunate time when we wind up with people who can tell stories pretty well, and it makes it all the more obvious when someone fucks it up.

Both can be argued to make very strong narrative driven games, both make said games with a morality play angle and point behind them.

On the flipside, both know how the wider gaming industry works, and why it works well.

All dat autistic screeching. :autism:

This is the same fit they threw over Cassandra. And hilarious the lazy sods think there's going to be mods just made from nowhere. Coupled with no serious coder giving fucks, ME as a series is notoriously hard to mod. This is not Baldur's Gate. You will NEVER get your romance mods you saddos.

There actually was a same sex romance mod for ME (I think ME1) so who knows, maybe ME:A can get one as well, regardless of how difficult it may be to do.
I can guarantee you, the moment a mod like this comes out for ME:A you are gonna have those same people on Tumblr go like "THIS IS WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE BIOWARE" and then probably bitch that Liam is bisexual and not homosexual, while there probably will be so many issues with the game that they'll probably ignore lol. It's pointless to cater to these people, they always bitch about everything except the actual game flaws (whether they be story, gameplay, sound etc. related) and can't be pleased at all.

Speaking of which, I haven't played an ME game myself, but this looks like garbage, even for someone who's completely new to the series (not that I'm gonna play Andromeda, it's just the first time I've ever taken an active interest in an ME game) Why do the animations and models look like an early PS3 game? Seriously. This IS a AAA game, right?

and on the flip side a het romance mod for exclusively homo characters will be met with hysterical screams about erasure

And if there's any form of a love triangle or similar they'll reeeee at the het member of the triangle and their voice actor for daring to frustrate their OTP.

I wish I was joking but the Tumblrina fandoms are just that awful.
