I've been casually lurking this site for years, but now with 4chan down, I figured it's time to finally make an account here. Might as well start with an effort post.

One thing I've always found funny is just how little people understand what janitors are. Have you guys never looked at the janitor application page? It's literally all there. It's nothing hidden or secret, it's all public information.

https://archive.ph/oU6fc (archived version as site is down)

At least once a year they put up link to this on top of the site and have a janitor recruitment drive, if you've been on 4chan for years, you must have seen it at least a couple of times. I'm not going to insult anyone's intelligence here by saying you should have considered applying to do it for free, but have you never been curious just how these things worked and looked at it to see what they want and what they offer?

All janitors can do is delete posts and threads and snitch on you to moderators, "Mommy! This guy said the nigger word! Ban him!" They can't see your IP and see which posts are yours. Unless they have some kind of internal ID system? But I haven't seen anything in the leaks about it. Think about it, if janitors, and there's what, like two hundred of them according to this leak, could see users IP, you'd have that shit leaking constantly and janitors targeting people they hate. They can't even ban you. All they can do is forward your posts to mods and hope they ban you.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying jannies dindu nuffin, leave them alone, I've had more than my fair share of bad experiences with garbage janitors. And seriously, what the fuck were these retards thinking, using e-mail addresses with their actual names on it? Or what the fuck was 4chan thinking, not throwing away their applications in the trash the second they applied with fucking .edu e-mails? It makes me wonder if the mod team is desperate to recruit jannies if their standards for tech literacy are that low.

image boards have been getting fucked by glows even more since christchurch.
Fuck, FBI presented some screencaps of /pol/ in a court case about calls to violence, and the stupid motherfuckers forgot to remove the (you)s from the fucking print.....
I dont believe 4chan is 100% controlled by feds, but they do have their hand in there.
Fuck, all they have to do is just post there.
4chan has been a honeypot for ages. It's the easiest way to catch the lowest common denominator of retards. 4chan's brand recognition as the internet boogeyman has made it a attractive target for glowies planning stings.

sweet sweet karma for these fucktards

Did any of you guys still go on 4chan? I started going on like 2010 but I just ended up only really using /vr/ to talk about old games.
I haven't posted on 4chan in years, but I would usually have tabs open on the archive sites like desuarchive, 4plebs, arch.b4k to keep up on things and to check links for repos/info. Actually posting on 4chan within the last decade just from afar seems like a fucking nightmare though. You mentioned /vr/ which is a board that would be right in my wheelhouse as someone who prefers playing older games, but lurking there I quickly figured out that if you don't talk about only Nintendo games you get schizos and fanboys shitting up the thread with "who the fuck cares about this it's not Nintendo". I love old PC games, and any PC game that falls outside of the designated Doom/Thief/Build engine general which had its own problems), would quickly get shot down by the screeching Nintendo autists wanting to do console war bullshit like it's the 90s again.

"Obviously" due to tech debt or pure functionality? PHP is pure fucking ass for security reasons time and time again. Even the maintainers couldn't keep a safe repository, cannot trust these retards (their Git was hacked some time ago)
Tech debt if you want to label it like that. A better way to put it is that they're just lazy retards that don't give a shit. Do you really think they'd never had updated their software if they cared about security even a tiny bit?

Did any of the leaks reveal why they removed the IP counter?
I've seen people speculate that it's because they want to hide away shilling, but that sounds too naive to me. If they wanted to make money from shills, they'd just sell them unique IDs and let them spam. It's probably just to hide that the site is slowly dying. Every graph I've seen on the site's activity has been a downward spiral.

Tbh the best thing to come out of the latest in honeypotting from 4chan is the Volusia County Sheriff revealing he had CSAM on his devices when noone asked at a press conference. Dumb boomer, wish he would have gotten a warrant on his ass for that one lol.

By the way, when I received my permanent ban, I think they also somehow blocked me through CDN. Like only basic HTML could load, and not the JavaScript and styling. Is there any confirmation now that the source code has leaked that they did this kind of a thing?

7 fucking mods for /ck/, where were they that one time a thread with some guys dick as the OP was left on the catalog for what felt like weeks? And wow, I'm not surprised /m/ has only two mods (might as well be zero), no wonder a few shitposters have easily taken over the catalog there with their low quality daily spam.

There will never be a replacement for 4chan.
There's no need for such a thing. 4chan is outdated in terms of the Internet media and general web culture. It didn't evolve toward something new, but ended up with the same shit as every other site, just in different boxers.
And I disagree; nature abhors an empty niche, there will always be competitors to fulfill it.

I hear a lot of people doomposting about how "4chan is over because the source code leaked." Is that really that big of a deal, though? It was decade-old code that hadn't been touched since moot sold the site.

Obviously, it means the site will probably be down for more than just a few days, but does it even *matter* if the source code leaked if the code gets updated or significantly rewritten anyway? Serious question.

It was probably one of them that posted it tbh, whichever one actually checks the board. Jannies and mods posting obscene shit and then not cleaning up after themselves is disturbingly normal.

You don't understand! They need 7 people just to make sure nobody posts Nikocado's asshole in a thread!

Deleting browser cookies + changing ip always worked for me.

The Yotsuba source code has been out there for a while, so it's not like this is some kind of new thing. It's mostly just that whatever happened was big enough to really fuck things up and people don't seem to care enough to fix it.
