4chan has been a honeypot for ages. It's the easiest way to catch the lowest common denominator of retards. 4chan's brand recognition as the internet boogeyman has made it a attractive target for glowies planning stings.
Also, i knew a guy who hosted a minor image board that was a splinter from a different minor board because the place started autofiltering the nigger word, which pissed off everyone.
Eventually after few years worth of shit posts, politisperging had been accumulated by few dedicated actual mental patients, the place started getting spammed with darknet weapons market links, cp links and "totally genuine" discord invites, the owner shut the place down for a week.
He had banned VPNs for a while but that didnt stop the spam lessened but it was still coming.

After a week he put it back online and showed some of the IP logs, now if i recall correctly, the darknet CP links were coming from IPs that by simple googling could be linked to an NSA office.

Ive seen quite a few posts online about how there seems to be a dedicated effort to shit up and harass altchans to drive the audience "elsewhere". Especially any altchans that allow "extreme" political views.

Like fuck, even Josh was getting fucked with hard when he was hosting 9chan for a while, but the people who spammed CP there were mostly trannies and other pedophile vermin and insane people who have a thread on here and hate that they have a thread.

can someone please make a summary of what was actually compromised ?

So far i gather that 4chan gold paypigs got they emails and ips leaked.
Also 4chan recently used to ask for email verification just to bypass catchphras easier, was that compromised too?
The shartynigger who hacked, surprisingly, isn't interested in leaking any personal info that isn't directly related to jannies. So 4chan Pass users are probably fine.

I'm guessing the problem is that the source code has been shown to be outdated, unsafe, and pajeet-tier. If it were safe and well-written, then there shouldn't be any issue with the source code going public.

I don't think there's any value in making "4chan2" when superior open-source imageboard software already exists (e.g., vichan).
It's not that they couldn't like swap over to a better and more secure imageboard clone. God knows there are plenty out there. It's just that 4chan is the name/brand and that's really all it has going for it. Once you strip away some of that facade, it's really nothing more than like a BBS from the 90s.

Not like the mods have been unknown for years anyway. Hell, I've interacted with mods myself. People act like they were always extremely super sekrit, but even a bit of offsite activity linked there will get at least one's attention.
The weird thing about it to me is how you can tell if they like you or not without ever actually speaking to them. As a (retarded) teenager I did post a censored picture of my face on /r9k/ twice; I was merely warned both times instead of being banned. Which is funny, because there were people complaining about how they'd post their hand or something and get a 3+ day ban.

It's not about technology. It was a large community that has now been killed off.

The anonymity, unconditional engagement, and even playing field are completely missing in social media.
Today I wanted to post the terrible bread that I made and I had to post that shit on xitter, where surprise surprise, zero interactions. On /ck/ I’d have a dozen people cursing me out and several people actually giving me advice. What’s the alternative, going on reddit and posting bread and getting a dozen useless comments quoting marvel movies?

That's my main issue with most of the internet nowadays, there's this requirement to scrape together an audience or build up your fake internet street cred before the site is even remotely usable. If you just want to chat casually about something niche, ask about the odd quick question, or toss something silly out there, there is essentially no outlet for that since it's not something that dresses itself up and dances on a stage to appeal to the masses. It's like the only way to have a shot at reaching another human being is to contort yourself into sensationalist clickbait. Admittedly 4chan had gotten like that in recent years too, where it was mostly the same stock bait posts that got engagement, but that's more of a culture issue than an instrinsic part of the platform structure.

Basically, I don't want to be an e-celeb or larp as one. I'm not a creator with an audience I'm just trying to have fun and screw around a bit.

Obviously, it means the site will probably be down for more than just a few days, but does it even *matter* if the source code leaked if the code gets updated or significantly rewritten anyway? Serious question.
The issue is for how long the site will be down and how expensive it will be to fix. Will gookmoot want to go through with it or will he just wash his hands of it? He's clearly not that interested in running the website. It was just a form of passive income for him.

Edit: Somehow double-posted, but I'll add that I think the death of OC culture in tandem with the rest of the internet has had catastrophic effects on quality. Ironically it is easier than ever to become a big name artist or whatever but the new mindset of grinding to hit x number of followers or monetize yourself has killed off the authentic funposting that used to help develop lovable in-jokes. People don't care about putting time into something that they won't profit off of anymore, whether it's in actual money or e-prestige attached to their name.

CHICKEN JOCKEY!

I'm pessimistic about the future of the site. I'm sure it will come back, but it will continue its slow decline into irrelevancy. It's just the way internet works these days. When 4chan was created, not only were there a lot less mentally ill people online, but the internet itself was different. Evading a ban wasn't as easy as clearing your cache and turning airplane mode on and off. Maybe a site like 4chan could work if you had some kind of registration in the background, but your account name was hidden while posting so no one except mods could see who you are? But as it stands, tying bans and site access to IPs in this era of easily obtainable and swappable IPs is just untenable. You either need to change things dramatically, or do what 4chan is doing, long ass timers and captchas that only seem to hurt legitimate users more than ban evaders.
Ideally an anonymous board moderates itself. So some fucking kike troon posting blacked shit gets his thread spammed with gore in turn or anons hijack some off topic garbage with on topic discussion, making the kike troon seethe. You could apply global ips to every poster and make them easily ignorable for everybody, nothing frustrates shitposters more than being ignored. Rangebanning everybody outside of white countries is a necessity of course, except maybe an /int/ zoo with flags where you can laugh at dumb shitskins who will never be white.
Jannies can fuck off with their petty bans, nobody gives a fuck about lame ass rules that are ultimately just used to harass anons and hinder actual organic posting. Jannies and mods arent there to "moderate" "the community" but to make sure the admin doesnt get v& over trannies posting ´p.
Plenty of ways to make an anonymous imageboard work, its actually jannies and rulefags who ruin the concept.

So honest question, will the site ever be restored? This doesn’t appear to be some sort of Antifa or government take down-it’s just internecine drama that escalated.

I don’t follow 4chan news so I’m curious what the situation is.

I just skimmed the code and configs and I think maybe, just maybe, they just uploaded files to their disk directly.
there's no reason to do anything else for data that isn't even preserved. It's just a ring buffer that drops old posts into nothingness
I've always wondered what was wrong with the retards who run 4chan archive websites. Old threads getting deleted forever is a feature

Honestly that was part of why I used the site at all. Even though the culture was dogshit it made me feel like I was experiencing the late 90s-early 00s just based on the imageboard format and antiquated interface. But 4chan's decision to stay in the past bit it in the ass pretty hard.

The thing with web backends being leaked is that some autist WILL read through the entire thing and find vulnerabilities that can be used for god knows what. The probability of this happening is near 1 especially considering it's 4chan. Either they scrap and rewrite this entire hunk of shit or they'll be pwned again, but honestly it's hard to tell for sure because merely updating your fixes a lot of vulnerabilities.

Nice, thanks. god even the naming convention suck.
But /www/4chan.org might be an NFS no? by naming it seems very uncommon to keep it to the local fs considering they might have more than 1 node. even a junior SysAdmin would pick up on this (but then again as you said in earlier posts, these are extremely lazy nigger so who knows)

fuck i didn't expect to be spending another day here but since 4chan is still down is there any word as for when it will come back
also i think all of you guys doom posting about it are off the mark i bet the site will be fine

In theory, if you grab the true source code, you might find ways to circumvent """safety checks""", such as hardcoded bans, filters, JavaScript sanitization (should be mod+ only privilege), and even captcha (can consider this as the holy grail, allows spamming, etc).

The CAPTCHA key and CDN-injected JavaScript were leaked too, in imgboard.php if I recall.
