4chan is for stupid people who thought they were smart. Don't kid yourself into thinking that any website is somehow better than another one.

/mlp/ alone was better than this entire website. That's not an insult to this website; it's just an impossible bar to clear.

4chan attracted a core of people devoted to the true and the beautiful—even the grotesquely beautiful—uncompromisingly. They didn't need names; there was a oneness of soul in the process of the work.

It was obvious—even over text—when redditors and other undesirables would insert themselves. They'd say things like "I've said it before and I'll say it again", as though anyone cared what they'd said before, or would know who they were afterword. They'd cargo-cult the cultural byproducts, unable to iterate or advance the conversation beyond parroting what had been said (and not understood) before—more concerned with identifying themselves with a subculture they percieved to be prestigious in some way than in the object of that culture.

Those people show up everywhere, but imageboards were where you went to escape them. The reason I keep bringing up /mlp/ is that it was the only board that managed to preserve that spirit; it was redditor kryptonite. In April fools 2017, when /mlp/ and /pol/ fused into /mlpol/, the /pol/acks said that the nor/mlp/people were not only somehow farther to the right (they'd notably hated trannies since at latest 2012 due to Purple Tinker—nearly a decade before people "peaked" or whatever on this website), but their mareposting was also scaring off the redditors who'd been plaguing the board.

I always checked back in to see how they were doing. Underneath all of the coomslop and EqG cancer, you could always see that old heart weakly beating. From birth to death she was a diseased, beautiful animal.

Just my 2 cents but coercing everyone back to their monoliths is the best way to keep track of everyone. If fragmenting the user base of the internet still worked it would be difficult to keep track each chans(or any website really) culture to truly understand what are they discussing. With the way things are you have to monitor 5-6 websites. Much easier than whatever obscure 50 altchans. If governments were run by competent people in the 90s-2000s they would've made a bigger, more intrusive social media. They were probably seething having missed this opportunity.
It's more convenient to mold the old mentality from:
"I'm going to hop and surf the Internet to see what I can find!"
to
"I'm going to scroll on Twitter to see what the algorithm offers."

Edit: Now that I think about it, it's not even reshaping the old mentality of existing users. It's better to not give them the option all together.

I mean the way I look at it was the website is infamous but after 2020 the poster numbers even on top boards were dropping badly. We all link 2016 as a bad year but after 2020/corona the shitposting demoralization and overall negative assholes really killed the vibe of the website. Werent daily user numbers capped at like 25,000? That is honestly pretty fucking small in terms of the world wide web. Add in a majority of the other hobby boards were dead most of the website was video game shitposting with all the /v/ boards and then that gay v tuber shit took over too.

Combined with the fact what lucrative info did 4chan have outside of pass user info? Sharty were the only ones who really wanted to take down the website and most leftist hacktivists were probably too lazy to even do what they did.
