I've posted there for nearly 20 years now, there's some excellent discussions to be had on smaller boards especially on niche topics that you'll be hard pressed to have elsewhere without wading through some circlejerk on discord or whatever.

Yeah, /g/ and /vr/ are generally pretty nice to post on as they're not completely trannified safe spaces like most other forums for technology or retro games.

I think a good example of why 4chan jannies are so hated is when Billy Mitchell won his lawsuit several weeks ago. The rules of /v/ lay out that it is a board discussing video games and video game culture. Well, Billy Mitchell is clearly a major figure in video game culture, and this was a topic that a lot of people wanted to discuss. Jannies were patrolling the board deleting anything that looked like a Billy Mitchell thread

Updating software stacks isn't trivial. You often need to go in and rewrite code to work with the newer stuff and this is especially true on PHP where even minor version bumps can completely break common libraries.

Don't forget it's a mess and no one has really worked on it in a decade, upgrading one thing and breaking something somewhere else with no one who has a deep understanding of how it works/experience with it is hellish.
Rewriting from scratch would be significantly easier, either way I don't expect to see anything for months.
