A lot of board culture / site culture in 4chan’s early days was contributed to by many thread identities like W.T. Snacks. Tripfags used to be far more common on all boards than they are now, and /b/ used to simp for a new e-girl every so often like Creepychan, etc. Anonymity of the format contributed to the culture the site developed in almost equal part to the various personalities that grew popular on it, but ask yourself how many of these personalities are now synonymous with 4chan? Even people who have never used the site at least know who Boxxy is.
But the “fun” kind of personalities are all but extinct from the internet. It’s a culture-wide issue that extends beyond 4chan. We’ll never have the kind of attitude that shaped 4chan when the internet was in its infancy ever again.
