UN Japan bus driver with 3 decades of service loses $84,000 pension after he was caught stealing $7 - According to the Mainichi newspaper, in February 2022, the 58-year-old driver pocketed a 1,000-yen bill received from a passenger instead of putting it into the fare processing machine.

A Japanese bus driver with 29 years of service lost his retirement package worth $84,000 after being fired for stealing $7 from passengers' fares.

Kyoto City sacked the man, who was not named, after he was filmed by the security camera of his bus pilfering 1,000 yen ($7) in 2022.

After he was denied his retirement money of more than 12 million yen ($84,000), the driver sued the city but lost the case.

The verdict was overturned in his favor, with a court ruling that the punishment was excessive.

But on Thursday the Supreme Court delivered a final ruling in the city's favor, reinstating the original penalty.

It ruled that the man's conduct could undermine public trust in the system and the sound operation of the bus service.

In the original incident a group of five passengers entered the bus and paid him 1,150 yen, according to the ruling.

According to the Mainichi newspaper, in February 2022, the 58-year-old driver pocketed a 1,000-yen bill received from a passenger instead of putting it into the fare processing machine.

The theft was uncovered when the Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau spotted the incident on the bus's dashcam footage, the outlet reported.

Despite being caught on camera, he tried to deny it during a meeting with his superior.

The driver had been reprimanded several times during his career over various incidents, according to the ruling.

This included repeatedly smoking an electronic cigarette while on duty, albeit when there were no passengers on board.

Kyoto City hailed the decision.

"Each one of the bus drivers works alone and handles public money. We took it very seriously that embezzlement related to this area of our work took place," Shinichi Hirai, an official at Kyoto's public transport bureau, told AFP.

"If our strict measures were not accepted, then our organization could become careless and it could result in eroding the public's trust," he said.

He played a stupid game and he won a stupid prize. He should know they don't play around when it comes to that shit.

Happened to a school principal not too long ago as well. Dude was outed as constantly paying for a small coffee but grabbing a large cup in the mornings. But since he's supposed to be setting a good example and didn't, he got canned and lost his pension.

That’s funny because back when I was in high school a notorious superintendent was canned for wasting money making her office look nice over the needs of the students and the result was she sued the district and they settled on paying her more money to get out of the lawsuit, lol.

I saw one story I cannot find it now but the principal of a prestigious school was fired because his coffee cup was a large when he bought a small.

I think this kind of zero tolerance on crime is why Yakuza are infamous. Basically, if the price for stealing a candy bar and a flatscreen are the same, then people are going to steal more flatscreens instead.

Back to mobsters, they know that one trip to the police station means doom, so they will eliminate anyone who happens to “see too much”. Even cops maybe. Their work becomes much more high-risk and so they seek higher rewards as well, in terms of heists and schemes.

I am of two minds on this one.

On the one hand, its just the type of cyberpunk dystopian draconic punishments that I have come to expect from the Monopolized Hellscape known as Japan. But on the other, having such severe consequences for minor crimes does serve to keep everyone in line and acting appropriately.

My true issue is knowing that those at the top of Japanese society have been caught doing far worse and received no punishment, but that is a facet apparent in every society sadly.

Nah, that only happens with low-level public servants/salarymen. Suits and important politicians will pocket every single cent they can and tell you that your greed is destroying society

FINRA and the Japanese bringing back anti-stealing from day 1. Well, unless you are super rich and get to steal in more creative ways, I guess.

That's just life. If you are rich and your dynasty offered more to society, you get better perks. It's pretty gay that society can't reward people who deserve it, like people who make killer posts on the farms.

That's what bothers. It seems to exist in alot of civilized society of this "sweet spot" of where you aren't poor enough to not give a fuck about the consequences or you aren't rich enough to buy your way out of the consequences.

If you exist in that spot then the enforcers of rules and order will go out of their way to ass fuck you with no lube if you should slightly step out of line.

Holy shit IMG_9237.webp

that's how a high trust society functions

Respectfully disagree. There should be a path to forgiveness. This whole make one mistake and you’re out policy? Makes it feel like the laws of the jungle apply. No wonder some Japanese people are neurotic, asocial, autistic and shut-ins

I think Japan needs Christianity. It already agrees with many of their aspects about privately held beliefs and looking inward instead. But it also permits forgiveness and even *demands* forgiveness, beholding nobody as better because we have all made mistakes. This would also eliminate ranks and stupid status stuff. And while a long shot, it might make them less porn addicted, but that hasn’t worked on the US….

That's pretty extreme. I think corporal punishment could be a good middle ground for this kind of thing. Yeah he should be punished for stealing, but taking his pension is pretty ridiculous. Just cane him a few times in public and make him work an extra 2 or 3 months before retirement. I think that would be fair. People would know they will get punished for fucking around even on small stuff, but permanent punishments should be reserved for permanent crimes or at least very extreme crimes. That's just my opinion.

I agree. Japanese is functionally a high-trust society, but not really one. They're still shame-based as opposed to guilt-based and nuking the minor shit is how they can LARP as high trust. Christianity is what made the West guilt-based and high trust, it also allows redemption in exchange for repentance, which is the often over looked core of Christian forgiveness.
