I find that the case with all my interactions really, as soon as I get what I want out of a conversation I begin to despise the other person when they keep talking about unrelated stuff. This doesn't happen over the internet, and it's an active problem I'm trying to work on like starting small talk and keep it going.

Never had that be a problem myself. Anything of the sort was off topic or outright porn and could be reported and deleted. But again, I mostly just browsed really slow boards so my experience is hardly the median one. As you move up in forum traffic things become increasingly awful and once you make it to places like /pol/ it's just a radioactive disaster zone.
