Gaming has a lot of relevant parallels you can apply to real world shit.
Like how in strategy games how hypercomplexity and empire sprawl vs min/maxing for a streamlined homogenous empire. Min/Maxing and methodical selective expansion is a better long-term strategy than conquering/absorbing foreign empires and having to deal with morale maluses, reconfiguring poorly optimized holdings, and dealing with low value pop types.
Forcing that malus effect (hypercomplexity, empire spawl, foreign morale malus) onto real-world empires is an effective strategy.
