Suspect in stolen police cruiser chase charged in Kentucky

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WFIE) - The suspect that police say led officers on a multi-county chase has been charged in Kentucky.

Daviess County Sheriff’s deputies say 31-year-old Nina Devillez faces charges of Evading Police, Criminal Trespass, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct.

Indiana State Police say just before 9 a.m. Monday morning, Warrick County Dispatch received a call about a reckless driver on State Road 62.
A Chandler Police officer tried to stop the car, but the driver kept going.

Troopers say the vehicle eventually stopped after crashing into a ditch on Heim Road between Inderrieden Road and Lincoln Avenue in Chandler.

ISP says Devillez, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet, exited their vehicle and started waving an object that appeared to be a sword towards the officer.

According to ISP, the officer shot Devillez at least once.

Troopers say Devillez was able to drive away in the officer’s patrol vehicle and drove towards Boonville.

Police lost contact with the police cruiser until a Rockport Police officer spotted the Chandler Police vehicle traveling south on US 231.

Police tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspect continued to travel south at speeds of more than 120 mph.

Daviess County deputies say they received the call soon after saying Devillez was leading police over the William Natcher Bridge.

According to police, Devillez crashed into an open field while on US-60 near Terminal Road.

Officers say Devillez ran away from authorities was eventually tased and taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office says it was apparent that the suspect had been shot at some point prior to crossing into Kentucky and was bleeding heavily from several gunshot wounds in their chest.

Devillez was taken to the hospital. She remains in custody at the hospital under DCSO guard and is receiving medical treatment

Once released from OHRH, Devillez will be taken to and booked at the Daviess County Detention Center and an Extradition Hearing will be held within a few days.

Court records show there’s an attempted murder case ongoing against Devillez in Lawrence County, Indiana.

Devillez was charged in November with seven felonies including attempted murder, battery and criminal confinement.

The victim was reportedly shot several times just south of Bedford.

Devillez had a $20,000 bond.

The next court date in that case is May 19th.

ISP: Person steals police cruiser after being shot by Chandler, Indiana, officer (Archive)

(This story has been updated)

EVANSVILLE — A defendant out on bail in an attempted murder case is accused of stealing a Chandler, Indiana, police cruiser Monday after sustaining at least one police-inflicted gunshot wound, prompting a high-speed pursuit across state lines.

The chase ended in Daviess County, Kentucky, when police apprehended the driver of the stolen cruiser after they crashed in an open field, according to the Indiana State Police.

The Daviess County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as 31-year-old Nina Adaline Devillez, of Santa Claus, Indiana. Paramedics transported Devillez to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where they were being held under guard Monday afternoon for treatment of at least one gunshot wound.

According to court records and the Indiana State Police, prosecutors in Lawrence County, Indiana, charged Devillez with attempted murder, aggravated battery and a slew of other offenses on Nov. 6. Devillez was released from jail days later after posting a $20,000 bond.

A Lawrence County Sheriff's Office detective wrote in a probable cause affidavit that Devillez admitted during a police interview to having shot a man multiple times on Nov. 4, though Devillez reportedly claimed the shooting was an act of self defense following an alleged assault.

Lawrence County Superior Court records identify Devillez as a "female," while the Indiana State Police and the Daviess County Sheriff's Office publicly identified Devillez as a "male."

Indiana State Police spokesperson Sgt. Todd Ringle confirmed the driver arrested Monday following the pursuit was Devillez, though he said Devillez was a "biological male."

The events leading to Devillez's apprehension Monday began in Chandler, a town of fewer than 4,000 in Warrick County, when a 911 caller alerted dispatchers to a silver Toyota Corolla driving recklessly along IN 62.

Within minutes, a Chandler Police Department officer caught sight of the sedan and attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the driver, identified by police as Devillez, didn't pull over — prompting a brief pursuit that ended when Devillez crashed into a ditch, according to Ringle.

"The suspect got out of (their) vehicle; there was a confrontation that took place between the officer and the suspect," Ringle said. "At one point, the suspect displayed an object that appeared to be a sword and (they were) waving it around... The police officer drew his weapon and fired more than once."

At least one of those shots hit Devillez, according to the ISP and the Daviess County Sheriff's Office. Ringle declined to comment on the extent of Devillez's injuries early Monday afternoon.

The sheriff's office news release states Devillez was "bleeding heavily from several holes in (their) chest" when deputies later came into contact with them in Kentucky.

News of the police shooting in Chandler spread quickly on social media after a bystander posted video footage depicting portions of the incident. The footage showed Devillez accosting an officer with a long, hand-held object prior to the shooting. Ringle declined to say whether police had confirmed the object was, in fact, a sword.

A Chandler police official declined to comment on the pursuit or shooting Monday morning. The officer who fired the shots has not been named.

The incident caused Warrick County schools to go on lockdown. That was lifted by late Monday morning, school officials told the Courier & Press.

Now suffering from a gunshot wound, Ringle said Devillez continued to elude the officer and ultimately "gained access to" a police cruiser, prompting a second chase that would stretch dozens of miles and cross state lines.

Police in Rockport, Indiana, about 25 miles from Chandler near the Hoosier state's border with Kentucky, clocked the stolen police cruiser hitting speeds of more than 100 mph during the pursuit, according to Ringle.

A Daviess County deputy converged on the chase near the intersection of Terminal Road and U.S. 60 East in Maceo, Kentucky, where he found the stolen police cruiser "wrecked just off the roadway" in an open field, according to the sheriff's office news release.

Devillez reportedly fled the scene of the crash on foot, making it about 300 yards into the field until the deputy and a Rockport police officer caught up with them. The sheriff's office accused Devillez of fighting with the deputy and officer.

"Deputy (Tommy) Ferry used a Taser to subdue the suspect, who at this point was unarmed," the sheriff's office release states. "Following a brief struggle, during which the suspect attempted to strike officers with a motorcycle helmet, the suspect was arrested."

It was not immediately clear what charges Devillez could face in Indiana.

In Kentucky, The Daviess County Sheriff's Office said Devillez was preliminarily charged with evading police, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The attorney listed in Devillez's Lawrence County case could not immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Apparently he skipped bond for an attempted murder case, then stole a cop car with a sword and fled to the next state:
