A relative lived with cancer for years and his biggest concern after the first year was that “Everyone is so bored with hearing that I’m sick. The shock wore off and now I’m just a nuisance for needing rides to chemo and help at home.” That was not true for those who loved him but for the wider social circle they just wanted him to hurry up and do something interesting like fucking die.

It’s also the case (ask anyone widowed thanks to a terminal illness) that the person can show such resilience for so long that when they finally die, it’s a real shock. Then the widowed spouse feels guilty because it’s also kind of a relief after all of the uncertainty and living in limbo.

Anyone who doesn’t understand this probably just doesn’t have a lot of IRL friends and thus has never known such a case IRL. Those who choose to misunderstand it deserve to experience it for themselves.
