You just have to look at the current fad of bad series/movies raping several franchises as "fan fiction" and it suddenly makes a lot more sense.

And even worse is how they raped book series like The Witcher, Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time. There they deleted existing lore and rammed in their fan fiction storylines.

The Doctor Who fumble is much more impressive than Star Wars to me. After the Prequels Star Wars was basically a joke IP sustained entirely by the original trilogy and the expanded universe and games, whereas Doctor Who was able to create a resurgence in the early 00s that arguably took the series to the highest levels of popularity it had ever seen.

Another issue is that writers today have no life experience outside of college. Look at Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek.
