I think it was Az Hakeem who pointed out that where youth subcultures were frequently centered around music, and all that changed when we went from some sort of music player in our pockets to a smartphone. Instant access to chat and social media replaced instant access to music, and youth social groups suddenly changed to centering on fashionable political causes and sexual identities as tribal markers. He doesn't mention it, but it also changes the attention market from hyper local (just you and your friends group) to a worldwide scale.

So, yeah, these guys have probably never listened to metal or punk. Their teens didn't have a sound track to them the way people who grew up in the before times did. Maybe the growing prevalence of rap and hip hop coupled with a culture of 'that's not for YT' pushing the Tumblr-soaked proto-troons away from engaging with it the way they might have with goth played a part in that. In the end they just parrot the aesthetic of being counter culture while being deeply conformist and without any connection to the music that spawned it.

Maybe it's rose tinted glasses, but for some reason they seem so much uglier now even though they are echoing the same aesthetics. It's not like punks were cleaner, less superficial, or less into dumb body mods, hair dye and drugs. Maybe because of social media I've looked into the void and that's colored my perception of them.

Maybe the music was better, too.

I think that's an interesting idea, but how does he explain Spotify and other music streaming services?

Kids aren't going out and buying records, tapes and CDs, because they don't have to. They have access to all of the music they could ever want, at all times, on their phones.

And then here's the important part: should we tolerate lifestyles we already know are self-destructive, bad for your health, and highly comorbid with mental illness and antisocial behavior, for the sake of the "good ones?" Aren't we doing the "good ones" a disservice by continuing to enable them in such behavior? Wouldn't the "good ones" be better off if they simply abandoned it and detoxified?

Every community I’ve ever joined or tried to join slowly gets infected by these people.

• YouChew was a fun place for a little while, but then the troon admins tried to silence me for bullshit reasons.
• Several artists I’ve followed over the years have trooned out and deleted all of their older stuff to hide the fact that they weren’t always crazy.
• One community on Discord removed me from their server because my artwork didn’t look “professional” enough. Turns out the server is entirely run by troons.

TLDR: I hate everything these people touch and I wish they would stop ruining things.
