Hector Martin / Héctor Martín Cantero / @marcan42 / マルカン / @marcan42x / @marcan@treehouse.systems / Asahi Lina / Asahi Linux - Developer of Asahi Linux with a VTuber persona. Made Byuu's death unbelievable. Constantly accuses others of harassment and abuse. Hates Hacker News and Kiwi Farms.

It is probably just a coincidence. It is relatively common that chineese take on made up english names when interacting with the outside world and has nothing to do with The Hector Martin.

It's completely normal for chinese people to give themselves a "foreign" name that they use, because their chinese names are tough to pronounce correctly for non-chinese. Almost all of them do when they interact with non-chinese people in real life. What comes with chinese people using western names is that they sometimes tend to choose quite rare or uncommon ones.

This case looks completely legit for a regular chinese guy doing some kernel work. Maybe they even were inspired by Hector for originally choosing their name. Maybe not. Who knows.

You guys are right that's quite common for chinese take on an english name, but what gives me pause is that both the first and last name are english. I've never seen anyone change both first and last name. It really doesn't make much sense to change the last name since chinese last names are relatively easier to pronounce and people rarely refer to someone using their last name in a spoken context anyways, at least not enough to necessitate changing it like with first names.

But I don't believe it's Hector either since as @Cuckoman pointed out, the work they did is boring and not glamorous, there's no way a narcissistic egotist like Hector would do that kind of work. My best guess would be that it's just some expat in China.

Hector is at it again! This time he went down the memory lane and sperged about "libogc using stolen code", which is an integral part of every Wii homebrew. He them proceeded to archive the repo of the homebrew channel which hasn't seen any active development in years.

This was then posted to HN because nobody would even notice otherwise

He's really desperate for attention now, isn't he?

It's not like he's known libogc and devkitPro is based on Ninty's SDK for years, right?

Anyone know what happened with/have an archive of libogc issue #201 linked in marcan's homebrew channel soapbox? Both archive.is and archive.org only have the error page, curious how Wintermute told him to fuck off

It seems like every day Hector wakes up, he finds something to get mad about. It must be miserable to be such a petty, vindictive manchild. I can't imagine caring so much about a minor issue that you throw an autistic tantrum in public and slapfight devs on issue trackers. It baffles me that a grown man acts like this, and even more that people take him seriously.

I blame painful dilation sessions

By the way this is one of the most upvoted recent posts on /r/games and there's really only one or two comments calling him out

In case you were wondering, this was the name of the the original issue:
8787442623a4624f.webp

I will say that Wintermute (the guy who maintains devkitPro and libogc) is known to be a huge control freak. He banned a lot of homebrew devs from the Nintendo DS scene from the repo for libnds and refused to accept their pull requests because it's made for "piracy tools" even though it were changes that would benefit a ton of other devs. It got so bad that they ended up making their own library for making DS apps that he's still probably seething at. Pretty much everyone hates him because of how hard it is to work with him and how butthurts he gets when people try to make alternative solutions since it hurts his "ecosystem" and yet he barely makes any effort to let people contribute. Most of the code he maintains wasn't even his to begin with, all he did was ask people if he could add it to his organization, make a few improvements, and then became a glorified gatekeeper over them years later.

So as much as a dick move it was for Hector to do this, Wintermute is equally as much of a dick and probably would have ignored his warning anyways even if Hector happened to make a pull request that solved the issue of plagiarism.

Another thing too is that the issue Hector pointed out was discovered over a year ago by someone else. If WinterMute cared he would have addressed it by now, and if Hector really cared he wouldn't have waited 16 months to call them out.

Hector is at it again!
Had a look at the GBATemp news post for this. It's a shame how many people just eat it up because it's from someone with veteran homebrewer status. Marcan knows his history is best documented on a site nobody wants to touch and he's carefully relying on it staying that way to avoid accountability so he can keep doing it.

I guess he is really running out of internet attention because bringing up decades old dirt against your own fellow developers for no reason is pretty fucking desperate.

You see this sort of destabilisation and drama-baiting when troons have been on the hormones for a while. It fucks with their brains and induces or exacerbates a bunch of personality issues, as well as hugely ramping up aggression.

What is Hector's endgame?
He probably doesn't have one. A drama addict always needs his next fix, perpetually.

Anyone know what DM_Me_Linux_Uptime is talking about? Which "shitty C maintainer" got the boot?
He'll be talking about Christoph Hellwig, the guy Hector spazzed out over.

He appears to have quit one of his roles after Linus disagreed with him over the Rust/DMA issue.
