I think Phil's problem there is that he's just chronically lazy - it's far easier to make up excuses for yourself so you can excuse yourself for not doing something than actually doing something, and Phil really doesn't have the drive to actually get up and do something - it's hardly a disorder, he's just terribly lazy

More than lacking the drive. He simply doesn't have to. Ever. No matter how bad he fucks up.

His sink broke, then his Switch broke. Maybe the rest of his gaming consoles have finally fallen victim to all that fucking dust in his "man zone". New Paytreen goal, doods!

Can you even imagine if the console he planned to use for upcoming releases broke? With the Switch stuff I think we have a small picture of the panic that would ensue.

Hello everyone,

First post here, was directed here to this thread by a friend who watches DSP. Just wanted to share some of my own views on Phil, being a former fan and all.

I discovered Phil back in early 2010 on Youtube, while looking for Mass Effect 2 videos. Became a very regular viewer because I thought he was funny. I've watched less of his content over time because I don't watch too much gaming content on Youtube these days, I much rather watch videos about cooking food, smartphones, or how to do stuff.

Still, I watch his vlog channel from time to time, and I believe the real reason he is flailing now is because he treats his fans and everyone else around him so poorly. Sure, his content is not as unique as it once was, but that doesn't completely explain the drop in viewership over the past few years.

The inflection point for me was when he released his video featuring his girlfriend Leanna for the first time, all the way back in February 2012. Now, I have nothing against Leanna personally, but her voice is extremely grating. Almost everyone I've shown videos featuring her voice agrees with me that she just has this incredibly nasally voice that just grates much people.

Most fans (like me) asked Phil to stop featuring her so much in his videos. It wasn't because she was a bad person or anything, her voice was not fit for public speaking. He refused, and attacked his fans for even daring to voice an opinion. (It took several years before he heeded their advice.) It was around then that his viewership began dipping. I stopped watching a lot of his gaming content around then.

Still, I watched his vlogs from time to time. What has become increasingly apparent over the years is that his modest success on Youtube has pumped up his ego many times over. Early on, he used to be pretty humble, but the moment he started making money off his videos, you could see the egoism in his videos. His fancy "staycations", leasing a BMW, buying a house near Seattle, etc. And despite all this, he was still begging people for money via Patreon. I mean, really man? Man up and live within your means if you want to keep doing this for a living, but don't beg for money. I never known any other Youtuber I've watched beg for money in the way that Phil has. Most are grateful for the support they get, and always emphasize that they would be nothing without their viewership.

To conclude, it wasn't necessarily just Phil's stagnant content that has put him into the more financially precarious predicament he's in today. It's the way he has treated his viewership, and how he burned bridges with former friends and collaborators like John Rambo.

Phil may limp along for another couple of years Youtubing and streaming on Twitch, but as he has to compete with more people getting into the game and such, he may not be able to make much of a living there anymore. Furthermore, I suspect that even Leanna will eventually leave him when she realizes that he can't take their relationship to the next level. I mean, he did probably beg her to get a job to help pay some of the household expenses.

I don't hate Phil, but he does rub off a lot of people the wrong way, especially with his behavior in recent years. It's a shame, because had he adapted his content and been less of a jerk, he could have easily been among one of the top 250 Youtubers/streamers today. He is genuinely pretty funny at times.
Since you were a fan of Dsp, were you there when he spammed tons of Street Fighter videos and broke the subscription feed?

So some "bad stuff" happened recently for our boy Phil, and it's apparently a big enough thing that it's going to cause problems with his finances. I'm sure he'll end up letting on exactly what the details are in his latest beg-o-thon.
Something bad happens to him every month, shit's getting predictable. He's going to beg,be awfully vague about the "bad stuff" and he's going to say it's going to be better in a month or two.Hell,he already did it today.
Edit:Ninja'd

He could not make it literally 10 seconds into talking without snorting. Holy shit get some fucking nasal strips.

Are things looking up for Phil? Phil seems to think so.

I can actually believe him ending up better off financially just by virtue of machinima taking such a large cut of revenue. IIRC machinima's standard CPM rate is something like $2/1000 but the average for YT is something like $7, I did a search ITT to see if his was posted here since I remembered something about him saying what his was and the last easy to find result was from quite a while back but was sub-$2.

And when he was tweeting about having told people his CPM he was saying it wasn't a big deal because it was his CPM rate rather than a machinima standard rate but I couldn't find a proper recent number, but if he's even getting half the YT average rate and his network doesn't have a horrendously exploitative split then he could easily be making as much as he was before, provided he's still getting a decent number of ad-hits and isn't having too many videos demonetized.

The biggest problem he has going forward is copyright strikes, on old content that still gets hits it will suck for him but I imagine those old videos have already generated most of the money they will ever potentially make.

Where I think he risks getting fucked bigtime is strikes on new content, in particular because of what his high volume of videos means for just how many opportunities exist to take away portions of his income and how much potential labour is involved in challenging such a large volume of claims.

That he's going back and forth between "I'm in trouble" and "Making hella dosh" means he's probably interpreting brief spikes in views on YT and Twitch(which are likely down to the recent machinima shenanigans) as representative of how things are going to be and then seeing that those numbers aren't going to hold.

Is it just me, or does it seem like DSP gets hardcore fans from unexpected places like countries in South America and Scandinavia?

I've heard claims that a lot of his fans are from Japan too. I think it might be a combination of cultural differences (they don't understand what an asshole he's being) and the language barrier (they don't understand what an asshole he's being). Foreign audiences might just want to see the gameplay, and because they don't understand how fucking annoying Phil is, they aren't as irritated by the stupid shit he says.

His finances are so bad it could litteraly be anything. Like he forgot some bills in his pants and Leanna washed them or he ordered extra fries at Mcdonalds.

Then again, its really interesting that he's pushing his paymetons and tips by directly saying it gives him the money directly. And that he had to cash the Machinima check right away on stream... But it's probably just tax time in the Burnell household.

Given the odd timings he streams at, I wouldn't be surprised.

Well, as someone who beat it earlier today, I will say that Phil is shooting himself in the foot by not actually finishing NieR Automata. Even with its flaws, it is the best game I have played in a very long time; at this point, I liked it more than the new Zelda.

He essentially left off at about the 25% point in the plot. Granted the first ending of the game makes you experience some crazy stuff, the game only really goes off to the races after ending B. When/if he picks it back up to actually finish it, the potential audience draw for it will drop like a stone because people have already played it for themselves. The bulk of people who will actually watch his play will be the TIHYDP crowd, just to see him play yet another Platinum game like shit.
