All that because Ghost of Tsushima arguably beat Ubisoft at its own game and its own race.
But seriously, couldn’t you take that “not much is documented except this little bit” and use that as an excuse to go hog wild to fill in the gaps, like what happened with Cocaine Bear? Now, the next Yasuke game can take historical liberties and say “We’re doing what AC Shadows did, but in a way that’s fun and entertaining”.
I feel like if Mark leaned into that, alongside pointing out that the game had the typical Ubisoft problems that gamers had for years (and I think he actually called out the pricing) , then maybe he and his arguments would have had some legs to stand on
Literally this. They have
always taken a lot more creative liberty with historic figures and events than people seem to remember, typically based on extrapolation, or sometimes just placing historical figures where they wouldn't have been at the time (there are a few examples of this in AC2, and some really incredible threads about the historical accuracy/inaccuracy of each AC game). The problem has never been historical accuracy - the problem is that Ubisoft games have all used the same stale formula for over a decade.
Man, Concord and Forspoken just keeps living rent free in their heads.
I mean that is Marky Marky and the faggy bunch's MO. Find a low hanging fruit, ignore all facts and blame everthing on wokeness. Star Wars Outlaws was doomed before it even released because of how shit Acolyte was and Veilguard flopped because Bioware removed the world states (the biggest selling point of the series) and lied about it fucking twice.
Speaking objectively about the things Mark has bitched about, the problem with games like Concord, Failguard, and AC: Shadows isn't the wokeness or DEI. It's that they all have fundamentally bad design.
- Forspoken was an overwhelmingly mid game with bad writing, bad dialogue, and an intensely unlikable and annoying protagonist. Main character could have been Chad McChaddington III, Lord of Chadley Kingdom, and it would have fallen just as flat due to the core design and writing flaws.
- Concord was a generic slop hero shooter with no marketing and ugly character design (the DEI design was the least bad design issue), which Sony planned to make their new flagship title (they invested so much money into tie-ins with future titles, merch deals, a mini-documentary with Amazon, etc), stealth dropped into a market saturated with generic slop hero shooters. It was doomed to fail even in a leftoid's "ideal" cultural circumstances where everyone is woke and loves DEI slop.
- Failguard was a complete departure from the DA formula. It railroaded the main character into essentially a supporting role for the rapey and obnoxious Qunari bitch. It had bad writing, next to none of the RPG elements of previous games, and also only incorporated like 3 of your past game choices. Your choices didn't matter, and the designs were all softened and made worse because it was literal design-by-committee "make this game for the broadest audience possible" slop. The bad design emphasized the ham-fisted wokeness of the Qunari bitch. This game might have performed better in the "ideal" cultural circumstances, but arguably not by much.
- AC: Shadows is a Ubisoft game.
- Star Wars Outlaws was generic and mid with forgettable characters. The only reason it sold at all was the Star Wars title. It would have performed neither worse nor better in the ideal "woke" political environment.
- A lot of the recent shit happening with Japanese games and censorship is a direct result of CERO's ever tightening grip on the industry, which has been the bane of Japanese developers since 2006. Think ESRB but much more censorious - games (even American ones) regularly have to be censored to comply with CERO standards, even if they're given the 18+ rating. Even Sakurai (Smash Bros) wasn't immune, having frequent conflicts with them over the design of Palutena, which CERO kept deeming to be too sexual. There's nothing woke about CERO.
DEI is a plague that limits the creative options of any developer working for a AAA company in America - especially any which BlackRock or BlackStone (two separate investment firms in the same incestuous relationship) have gotten their slimy tentacles into (read: every AAA publisher). But bad game design is the bigger problem, obvious to anyone who has been paying attention to AAA games over the last 5-7 years. CERO's shit influence in Japan is pretty well known to most people who have been playing Japanese games for long enough.
But Mark is a tourist (he has admitted multiple times to not playing even the games he praises), and he has already modeled himself as the Culture Warrior who will Save Gaming. His tourism is on grand display by the fact that he exclusively focuses on AAA games. Like, wow, what a shocker that AAA companies owned by big investment firms who demand ever-increasing profit are pandering to as broad an audience as they can and not innovating. Who would have thought? On the rare occasion that he even mentions (not talks about) a non-AAA game, it's because the game exploded into mainstream attention.
Ah. I remember when this nigger and his dick riders, called Minecraft moive a woke product and the fact that it's going to bomb.
Funny how those culter war Niggers change thir tune when it's SUDDENLY became a massive sucess.
Remember when they threw the biggest actual shit-fit over an optional druid sex scene in BG3, claiming that the game was going woke and it would go broke? Funny how they now claim they never said anything of the sort now that BG3 was the best game of 2024, and potentially even the best game in the last 5 years.
