We could already just buy it from them which is not really different than what would happen if Canada were annexed. The advantage of not annexing Canada is that we don't have to deal with an ornery Francophone minority or the millions of jeets they've imported.The amount of freshwater in the proposed areas coupled with lumber and diverse other resources seemed like a good idea but if they refuse, well, then it’s just Russia v. Ukraine yet again. And nobody wants that.
90% of Canada's population lives within 100 miles of the US border. The idea that they're a potential Chinese vassal state we need to scoop up ASAP is laughable at best.
EDIT: Not to mention that I'd prefer the US taxpayer not be on the hook for the pension crunch that Canada is currently under due to it having a significantly more aged population than the US.
