I remember Nick saying something to the effect of Lawyers having magic words that can make any problem go away. If he failed then perhaps it was because he got the magic words wrong rather than he had no chance of winning. Nick doesn't believe in a no win situation which is a large part of the problem, and why he constantly doubles down rather than taking his defeat and moving on.This whole Nick vs Kurt fight has made me realize something about Nick's understanding of the law.
Nick inhabits a caricature of the defense attorney where he thinks his job is to do anything to defend the guilty because of imagined unfair treatment. Kurt from what I can tell understands that the job of a defense attorney should actually result in more guilty people being fairly convicted, by forcing the system to do its due diligence.
This partially explains Rekieta's attitude and behavior in regard to his prosecution. If his defense didn't win it wasn't because he should be convicted, it is his defense wasn't strong enough and the prosecutors and police are too strong.
He is in short the worst type of scum-fuck lawyer with no principles, simply out to wield his "knowledge" of law as a bludgeon to satisfy his desires.
