Something I once heard: the worst thing you can be in America is racist. None of the other -ism's come close to the power even a claim of racism holds, for obvious historical reasons. But the other ones are very effective too, and if you can make up a new -ism, you have a very powerful weapon in your hands. So it goes with transgenderism, which created an -ism to defend itself, modeled after the recently-successful "homophobia", to great initial success.

But the whole range of -ism's have been used far too loosely and inappropriately in recent times, and I think they're all losing their bite. That this one in particular is both the most recent and is defending something heinous, is just helping it all along. I think there may be some interesting cultural shifts in progress here. (That said, KF is probably not representative...)
