Things that the very rich and very poor have in common - Because economic class is a bellcurve and a horseshoe

I was watching this while falling asleep last night and apparently taking a shit sucked in the 14th century if you were a peasant or if you lived in a castle. Peasants just threw their waste in the streets and the nobles had holes over moats that people would sneak in through and assassinate them.

Shitty cars.

iirc Warren Buffett's daily driver is something like a 20 year old Buick, and the dude who started IKEA was famous for driving a clapped-out old Volvo right up until his death.

Up until recently, smoking was one such thing. It's mostly poors who smoke now, but the royal families of Europe still seem to have at least one dedicated smoker each.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

A good reliable car that can get to A and B with minimal maintenance required for 2 decades is worth its weight in gold.

- Not being aware of, or paying attention to, how much things cost
- (Over)Spending on convenience
- Intense brand loyalty
- Ignoring sales, deals, and comparison shopping

I guess the common theme here is price insensitivity (whether warranted or very much not).
The common theme of my post seems to be not following the rules of polite society. Either because you are powerful enough that no one can make you follow rules, or because you are so irrelevant to society that there is no point in enforcing rules on you. There are limits to this, like murder might still get punished. But something like daydrinking is either, you can do it because you are the boss, and it's a way to flaunt status. Or you don't have a job so it doesn't matter, or you work such a shit tier job that no one cares. Or work night shift I guess.

Reminded of irish standup Ed Byrne's bit about "how do you know you're middle class? didn't have a horse growing up"
Rich kid growing up in a mansion with dedicated stables? Of course he's getting a horse.
Poor kids growing up 15 to a 1-room shack all sleeping in a warmth-sharing huddle on dirt floors? The family gets a horse. To share.
Anything in between? No horse.

It's just like the bell curve. Just like the bell curve these extremes are clearly the model we should all follow, and anyone who is "sensible" with their wages should be shamed.

  • Most of society ignores their existence; unless there is a direct interaction or there is a news report.
  • They don't always know what day or even month it is. Sometimes even the year.
  • Might eat squirrel regularly.
  • Children don't attend public school
  • Might walk around mostly barefoot
  • Might have never gone shopping for new clothing
  • Only store they go to is Sneed's Feed & Seed
  • "Sister" might be their mother
  • Might be sent on an unaccompanied flight at 16 with their 10 year old sibling with no luggage to go stay with their grandmother they have never met before.
  • Someone in their household uses a chamber pot
