A 16-year-old track athlete was killed during a championship meet Wednesday morning in Texas by a member of another team, officials said.

Frisco Police confirmed the student-athlete died "despite lifesaving measures." The suspect, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, has been charged with first-degree murder.

A student from Frisco Memorial was the victim, according to local reports. Frisco Memorial Principal Brook Fesco wrote in an email obtained by Fox News Digital that Austin Metcalf, a junior at the school, had died Wednesday.

The incident occurred at about 10 a.m. at Kuykendall Stadium at the University Interscholasic League's District 11-5A championship meet. Anthony attends Frisco Centennial, roughly 7 miles away from Frisco Memorial.

According to the Frisco Independent School District, the meet was suspended shortly after the incident. The ISD added that the stadium "was immediately secured, and students were released and sent back to their home campus on FISD buses with expediency."

In her email, Fesco said the school "will acknowledge Austin’s death during 2nd period and will offer support throughout the day," adding counselors would be available.

"As a parent, your guidance and support will be important in helping your child process grief. Talking about this together, face-to-face, will give you a chance to discuss how your family understands and copes with loss. You may also want to discuss with your child how to be a supportive friend to classmates," Fesco wrote. "This loss might remind your student of past losses as well. The most important thing you can do is provide your child a chance to be heard and to express their feelings."

"The Frisco Police Department grieves with all those affected by this devastating loss and extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, students, and staff who are experiencing unimaginable pain," the department said in a statement. "The department is collaborating with the Frisco Independent School District and will continue to provide any support they need during this incredibly difficult time."

Metcalf, who also played football at the school, participated in both the boys shot put and discus events earlier in the day, with threw distances of 39 feet, 9¾ inches and 86 feet, 4 inches, respectively.

Anthony ran the boys' 100-meter dash in 12.38 seconds and was scheduled to compete in the long jump.

Eight schools competed at the meet, according to MileSplit.

Which does mean that Austin and Hunter were both held back a year at some point. This is probably due to their birthday. In the states, schools determine when a child should start kindergarten, and if the child turns five before September 1st, he/she is set to start. Austin and Hunter would start kindergarten the year they turned five, but because of their birthday, they would have been among the youngest in the grade. So, their parents most likely had them held back, even if that made them among the oldest in the grade.

It is different in every state.

I started school in a state that based it of off your age when the school year started.
I have a late fall birthday so one more year of freedom for me.
We then moved to another state that went off of your age that year. You could be born Dec 31st and you would start school when you were 4 because you would turn 5 during the calendar year.

So I went from being the same age as most of my class to being a year older than about half of my class.

TL;DR Every state has its own standards.
I don't know what it is in Texas.

Getting your kids to be the oldest in their grade is quite common in Texas. Unless you've lived in the South (especially Texas) the level of enthusiasm for high school sports is unbelievable. There are high school stadiums in Dallas that put many state universities in smaller states to shame.

Even dumbass shit like drill team (cheerleader variants) is a billion dollar industry within the state. Dude I know had a girlfriend who was a third party instructor for drill team paid for by the ISD. Most coaches in high school are just coaches. Rather than other states where teachers are also coaches because they like it and its additional money.

Due to this yeah. The Metcalfs being the oldest in their grade is a common practice. They would still graduate as 18 year olds and turn 19 right after graduation.

Look up "kindergarten redshirting" and be horrified at what parents do just so that their kid is the strongest/smartest in their class (because they're a year older than their classmates).

Sports have taken measures to combat it by using age-based divisions instead of grade-based ones, but academia isn't even aware of the problem yet.

I've visited a couple of African countries and traveled around with one other girl and no one else, using local transport and figuring out where to stay on the fly. The most danger we were ever in was overcrowded trotros where drivers were absolute maniacs in traffic, but in terms of actual person-to-person interaction, it was, to a person, absolutely shockingly safe and friendly. A couple of times people were so friendly we worried it was some kind of set-up, but no, there was no set-up, it was just people being curious and open about foreigners.

Now, these were what I would call "Africa for beginners" countries, not the DRC or Libya or something. Even so, the idea that Africans are ghouls who can't help but be violent fuckups ready to kill all the white women was not an idea I could personally support after witnessing the actions of actual Africans.

India felt much, much more unsafe to be in as a woman with few or no travel partners. I highly recommend African travel to the safer parts of the continent (Ghana, Rwanda, etc.). It's definitely "a world apart" from developed countries, but also fascinating (and very inexpensive after you've paid for the plane ticket).

Good point! You're totally right to be skeptical, but Rwanda is now the safest country in Africa, and very very very different from what it used to be. They're a model example used in many contexts to show how rapidly you can go from a really bad situation to doing well and attracting tourists. The nature looks like this:

And the capital city, Kigali, is the cleanest in Africa due to mandatory community cleaning of the streets. They literally shut the city down a few hours every month and every person in the city contributes to cleaning things up, plus they have private sanitation cooperatives doing daily cleaning.

Yeah, of course, stuff like this could retreat into barbarism. But if you look at a country like this and see what it's capable of becoming with just a generation of distance from a genocidal, warlord past, it's really hard for me to see how American blacks can say "we wuz traumatized, you should just forgive us for anything we do because muh racial trauma."

No slave in the US suffered something like what the Rwandans did, and slavery ended 100+ years ago. Rwandans seem perfectly capable of maintaining a nice society even though they have jack shit for money and their racial traumas happened even after the US Civil Rights Act.
