It's not that uncommon, a wife would die (from childbirth or disease) and the Husband would remarry (Orthodox Jews promote the idea of always being married). Well, if those Children don't move out from their home town or the surrounding area, eventually someone is marrying their half-cousin's daughter. Jews follow the rules in the bible/Torah, it explicitly says what you can and cannot marry. But cousin marriage of this type was still a thing in Europe even if you weren't Jewish. The difference is that 95% of your country was some flavor of catholic or Protestant (including you), so your options are pretty significant. If you though every woman in your area was ugly you could move to some other part of the country as still be able to marry within the church. Ashkenazi Jews also have a habit of naming their children to honor the dead. As to "all jews being related" if you disregard the genetic evidence (which keeps proving we are all related) all Jews practice the same religion no matter where they are from. We all knew hebrew (to some degree but at a minimum we could read it how much you can speak it depended on many factors like education) but it's use wasn't as widespread as it is now, it would be a 2nd or 3rd language vs a 1st.
