Games Journalism General

Lol, what happened here?

Dan seemed alright in the sense that he was someone who was actually excited to play games rather then being jaded and too cool for the room.
I faded out of Giant Bomb/GBeast around 2018. Jeff Gerstmann would spend half the podcast waxing poetic about what he does. “What does video game coverage even look like in 2018?” And bullshit like that. Dan would constantly bitch about how games weren’t fun, and during that time you could tell he thought he was hot shit because he was friends with WWE wrestlers. He left and only came back because he was let go from WWE and there was an opening when Gerstmann got fired. It was bizarre because the founder gets unexpectedly shit canned, and they already had produced these videos about Dan coming back being the new “content producer”. Anyways, Dan has been making “wacky content” for the past three years (that fucking sucks and only trannies like). I think the Alyssa Mercante Giant Bomb at night video is what caused Fandom to start watching what they were doing. I guess a Bombcast got taken down for them making gooner comments about a character in a video game. Jeff Grubb made a nervous video saying positive bullshit like “we are gonna figure this out guys”. Dan went full scorched earth saying he was never coming back and telling Fandom they need to fire him. I think he knew he was going to get fired for not policing the content and was trying to save face by puffing his chest. Fandom is right for not wanting a litigious moron on their content screaming about wanting people to fight her and saying she wants people to lick her asshole on their streams. Both Jeff Grubb and Dan were getting the boot for allowing this regardless of their reactions. The more subtle reason companies want to watch their employees more closely or is outright terminating them is something much more subtle on the Alyssa Mercante Giant Bomb disaster. Right before Alyssa made a fool of herself, Rebekah Valentine (the dumb bitch who tried fabricating a story about the Wu Kong developers being sexist from a blatant mistranslation) was bragging about unionizing on the stream. She even went as far as to say “If you want to unionize, reach out to me!” Like the fucking idiot she is. They want to unionize so they can strong arm these parent companies into funding their lawsuit they cause when they commit libel (like Valentine did with Wu Kong and Mercante did with Bobby Kotick). These assholes want full control of the industry through intimidation and blackmail.

One of the journos who wasn't involved in the firings had a whole ass rant on Bluesky about all the firings and blames it on Trump and how we need more "BIPOC-Led" and Trans-led gaming journalism.

The last post in that image is kind of amazing.
"I am not a protest person and marching is not my jam" ok, so you're a slacktivist then.
"I have none thoughts on how we operationalize a national strike or boycotts" so you're a brainless idiot, that when typing such a sentence makes me wonder how the fuck you ever had a job that involved writing.
"but I can say for fuckin sure that funding independent and small-scale esp BIPOC- and trans-led journalism is absolutely fucking radical and effective" effective for what? We're talking about video game journalism, an industry that has no audience(because they killed it themselves) and no money in it(because who the fuck wants to actually spend money advertising in what is effectively an empty room).

With as few people as there are in the video game journalism "industry", it's fucking hilarious to see how none of them understand(or are willing to admit) there's no revenue, no clicks, and no audience.

It’s kind of bewildering to look back at the past 10-12 years and see how badly game journos fucked everything up from their greed and narcissism. They pushed away a vast majority of the consumer base and basically told them if they did not agree with their activist opinions they would not be allowed in the hobby. They threatened developers with bad press if they didn’t step in line. They have incestuous quid pro quo back door dealings with developers and have forced them to align with certain beliefs a majority doesn’t agree with. Now they are trying to strong arm the companies that pay them by a feeble attempt at unionizing. These motherfuckers along with Sweet Baby Inc were attempting a complete takeover of the industry, but they pissed off too many people and bit the hand that fed them. The grift is over, and I would not be surprised if most of these people are blacklisted from the industry.

Sadly this is pretty much all the Jeff Gerstmann show he does now is, but him saying it alone in his bedroom in a 2-3 hour monologue with chat. Its amazing how far all the GB people have fallen off. Dont get me started on how bad Nextlander is. But they all have a couple thousand people willing to give them at least 5 bucks a month and thats all you need I guess.

The Dan Ryckert Patreon has to be coming this week I would assume. Although even now he has a side hustle with Mike mahardy and Mary Kish in another overly long self indulgent video game podcast coasting on parasocial memories of GB

The entirety of Giant Bomb has become so unlikeable now. Everything Jeff says now about Giant Bomb, regardless of what time or era, is negative. I don’t think I have ever really seen him show any sentiment towards his time at Giant Bomb. Apparently he was miserable the entire time because god forbid you have a job that pays you to talk about video games and produce gaming related content. Everything he says is contradictory, and he never has any gratitude. He blames being stuck at Giant Bomb because Ryan died, he was unhappy but because of the surge of interest in the site he HAD to resign a big contract (which he sheepishly mentions he may have recieved a chunk of Ryan’s potential contract). Anyone who was running Giant Bomb at any given time was a total idiot according to him. Whether it was Whiskey Media, Red Venture, CBS, or Fandom. I’ve seen multiple videos where it’s the same exact story. “I was 9 weeks from quitting and moving on but X happened so I signed a contact and it got worse”. He complains that he was never allowed to expand the site, but then complains how complex and difficult it was when they hired more people and expanded the site lol. He whines about how Dave Snyder told him not to be emotionally attached to the brand after they sold to CBS, but then says he was still attached to the brand and did not like being told what to do. He fails to mention exactly how much he made from the sale, or if any of his coworkers/friends had any say in any sale, but he coincidentally married his trophy wife not long after and started having children. Jeff was partially responsible for being a carnie and exploiting Giant Bomb to where it is now, and has the gall to pretend like he had no hand it in, even though he obviously has profited handsomely from it. The fucking guy is talking about fucking building Trackmania servers in his garage, completely unemployed leeching off of his fans. Meanwhile his best friends Vinny , Brad and Alex have done patreon streams for the past four fucking years, and he has never been on once. Lmao

He had to have been compensated handsomely for selling the company to CBSi, and afterwards I am sure his salary was decent enough to keep talking about vidya that he had no real incentive to move on despite what he may claim. In fact it would not surprise me at all if he is lying about totally having plans to leave right before he got fired. Seems like just a convenient way to save face (You fired me before I could leave!).

I am also pretty sure he is an extremely petty person that holds silly grudges. Which is probably the issue with Vinny, Brad, and Alex. I assume its possible they didnt even consult Jeff before jumping ship. Unfortunately I dont think any entertaining drama will ever come to light. They all seem to understand they have a good thing going with their fan base that could be ruined if the drama was surfaced and so they just stay quiet

That's probably where his bitterness comes from, he probably did OK on that sale - but not great. Presumably Ryan, Vinny, Brad, and Dave would have also held equity in the site as well but they probably gave up a huge chunk for cash when they joined up with Whiskey Media. He probably did got a million or two out of it in 2012, but it probably ate the last of his equity as a result.

The corresponding $500 million and $50 million deals he likely got 0% of - which probably really upset him. He probably had some level of bonus payouts tied to subscriptions/views/etc that pretty much died when COVID hit and the parent company decided to cheap out on content. It seems really unlikely that he wasn't asked to be part of Nextlander, but he always had a pretty clear issue with being "just a streamer" and wanted to be part of something that was more substantial and was essentially forced to be just a streamer anyhow.

Jeff alone is still more informative than 90 percent of "enthusiast media" jacking off the dog (you are the dog) bullshit.

Once upon a time Giant Bomb used do a quick preview of pretty much every new game that came out, and they were good at it. They were kinda funny. Now all those old people have turned into passive-aggressive safe space people hanging out in their parasocial patreon dungeons. The tone shift is massive. They never evolved into doing interesting long form content. They just constantly regressed out of laziness. Constantly leaning more and more into the parasocial stuff. Even GameSpot managed to come up with a few novel ideas, like working with the British Royal Armory and doing their Speedrunner+Dev commentary series. Danny O'Dwyer does mini-documentaries as noclip. Jeff Gerstmann never progressed outside of his home office/storage den, shut in like some sort of Zero-COVID person. Jeff could do something interesting with countless industry contacts, but instead he'll just ramble into a mic on twitch.

Current GB is an abomination and Dan Ryckert's entire schtick is that he's stupid. It's not that deep or funny.

We're not and anyone who says this doesn't know their history. The 80s gaming crash mostly happened because supply was way higher than demand. Way too many companies trying to make their own home console and way too many games being made. You didn't even need to license back then, anyone could just make anything and it literally flooded the market. Most the games were trash, yes, but even if they were high quality there would have been a crash because the overall market was incredibly tiny back then.
It may not be an exact clone in every way, but there's no denying we have an oversupply of shit.

Too many games in general
Too many indies
Too many that have budgets that need to have skyrim levels of sales
Too many devs

And across ALL of those strats, consumers are becoming less and less interested in what they're making.

Every gamer only has so much time and disposable income, there has to be a limit to how much of this shit gets made. Whether it's a bubble pop or a crash or whatever we can't continue at the pace we've been going.

I didn't mind Dan on GB as he brought some sort of humanity to what they were doing, even if it was him playing up how dumb he was. He at least never delved into being the deep and profound game journalist that some of the cast attempted to be. I stopped watching shortly after Abby joined and tried to became the new Patrick so I have no clue how bad he got but from what I saw of him he at least tried to bring life back to the website in terms of content

It got worse after he returned from WWE. His dumb guy persona was played up ten fold and for some reason he constantly started using wrestling lingo to describe things all the time. When the audience complained he would do it even more. I think giving him full control went to his head and he thought he was the next Norm Mcdonald or something.

It's not even that. It's like "no one wants to eat at casual restaurants anymore" when it's actually "no one wants to eat at a restaurant with mediocre food and you're obliged to pay a 20% tax for someone to hand you your silverware and refill your water once".

Almost all of these gaming press outlets have driven off readers with years of consistent bullshit and made no attempts to reinvent themselves or admit wrongdoing. The fact that Zoe Quinn wasn't thrown out the second the quid pro quos were discovered is proof that the whole system is corrupt from top to bottom. Even the mass media will sacrifice someone now and then for ethics violations. (Granted, these are rare and token efforts, only going anywhere when they really piss off the establishment—it was fine for Chris Cuomo to run interference for Andrew until it involved the sexual misconduct allegations).

Games journalism back in the 90s was a really amateurish thing that felt genuine for the most part, even if they let in a few retards. You could read GamePro, EGM, PC Gamer, CGW, and others knowing that the review came from the heart. It didn't feel like anyone was buying reviews, and there wasn't a message being pushed.
Of course, there were some derp moments.

Doesn't beat the Final Fantasy 7 strategy guide with "go to this website to learn more about how to progress" bullshit

There are quite literally gigantic piles of revenue, clicks, and audience. Streamers are getting piles of cash, review copies, and thousands of viewers for basically every single video game release forever. Youtubers who make guides are thriving, and detailed reviewers are doing extremely well.

The medium has changed and there is now more effort required then "play 20% of a review copy, throw together a written review including the specific guidepoints the publisher sent over, then goof off for 30 hours" and it's sending them into a rage.

The only effort streamers have to put in is how to fake outrage and fake a personality, while staying on the safe side of any issue.
