As others have already said it's unfair to paint Ethan as being malicious and cunning, when he's just responding to how Ian treated him. The same could be said about idubbbz and it would be far more accurate.

Ethan has run defense for Ian constantly. Has promoted CC, brought him on the podcast, defended Anisa, etc. He's done a lot of good for Ian. To say that Ethan was just waiting for the moment to strike seems cruel. He has been backstabbed by one of his best friends, if you watch the original podcast where he learns about it he seems genuinely upset. He wouldn't have cared as much if it was someone else shitting on him. The fact that it was Ian, someone who he has said he has confided in and told about his mental health struggles. Then to see Ian use that against him to try to paint him as crazy and leave him out to dry while people target his kids would make anyone angry.

It's more that Ethan realized that there's no going back now for Ian and I think the betrayal he feels signals to him that there's no reason to leave the door open for reconciliation. He might as well go all out now and end it sooner than drag it out more than it needs.

This is exactly what's unfathomable to me. Ian inserted himself in drama unnecessarily and allowed a group of privileged idiots to use his platform to fuel their vendetta against Ethan, the one person in this situation who seemed to have a genuine relationship with him.

Now, he is enduring even more personal and professional backlash and those same group of people he went to bat for aren't even doing much (if anything at all) to run defense and help cushion the blowback for him after he platformed them. Not even the fans of that group are offering much assistance. Like parasites, they extracted the resources they needed and left him out to dry.

Ian, like a dumbass, exchanged a person who cared about him and was willing to help him out for a group of people who are fundamentally incapable of caring about anything that don't serve their own self interests. The way this man lives his life and seems to find new ways to fuck himself over is truly a cautionary tale.

I think it's a genuine possibility that the audience he thought he'd be gaining is much smaller than he thought, and he may still not realize this.
1) there has been talk of viewbotting on twitch lately. hasan is definitely implicated in this if true. this could be on twitch's end (we all know he gets special treatment) but it could also be iran or some shit, unironically.
2) hasan's community are the real brigadiers. their fans do everything they accuse others of, plus ally with people like badempanada who do this to an even greater degree. this allows them to make their side look more popular than it really is.
3) reddit. and not just snark. there is a network of pro palis astroturfing reddit which is connected to hasan. if you read this article, the majority of individuals mentioned who are involved in taking over subreddits as mods are also mods in hasan's sub. this is what happened to fauxmoi and youtubedrama.
4) casual fans who are introduced to this drama may leave when exposed to hasan's real beliefs.
5) audience compatibility. hasan and his friends make nasty political drama slop. there was little to no overlap before CCH3 -- in fact, as others have pointed out, they were already critical of him for not flagellating himself enough. it's clear the sjw types have only actually jumped onto his redemption arc because hes shitting on ethan. but he can't do that forever, and his videos sucked.

edit: to be clear, hasan's audience is still decent and big enough to sustain him. but given all of the above i don't know that ian could ever monkeybranch onto it to save himself. it is much smaller than it appears.
