Somehow from the premise alone I automatically knew this comic was going to be obnoxious. I feel like it's kinda pissing on the Magical Girl genre when you fail to visibly or narratively take after ANY of non-western sources in regards to it and have it essentially serve as window dressing for an overweight middle-aged white liberal woman's struggle with depression even though the setting makes it explicitly clear she's actually doing pretty good, all things considered. (Its been a WHILE since I've seen such a transparent self insert, like damn. )
There's so much that can and has already been done with "the heroes lost, what now?" but all the author can think of is "What if everything was exactly the same, but bugs were mean to people sometimes?"
Japan has also done the "grown woman magical girl" thing too, in many different flavors, including 'depressed midlife', without sacrificing good art for the sake of the story. Meanwhile, this woman is most certainly patting herself on the back because unlike
those other magical women,
her self-insert is fat and has hairy armpits, which to her is as #relatable as middle age comes. We should marvel at her originality, because no-one else has done it before.
You could have had the whole thing in color
That takes effort though. You can't expect effort from the kind of person that writes this:
Bitch reeks of "Unlike other Mecha shows, this one is about the characters".
Being honest, to me the color bit is the only decent part of this abortion. The premise, setting, dialogue, lineart and characters are unsalvageable garbage. But the color bit is fine. Not original in any way, but at least shows a smidge of effort, even if it is immediately nullified by the trash around it.
Unrelated to all of that... something that has been bothering me for a couple of days is her quitting magical girl duties for college. Feels retarded, even ignoring the fantasy aspect of it all, I understand
not being able to keep a steady job because of magical girl bullshit, but school? Particularly college, where students have so much freedom? Maybe if she was studying for some kind of Engineering degree, or even med school. But no one gives a shit when the Journalism student fucks off for an afternoon or three.
