It depends on the gas. jfc nitrous isn't going to instantly kill you in the way huffing duster can (difluoroethane can cause heart problems, so you can just slump over dead on the spot). That's not to say you can't die from huffing nitrous, you can, it's just not AS dangerous as air duster (in the same way playing russian roulette with one bullet is less dangerous than with a fully loaded gun).At least alcohol poisoning gives them a chance and a life lesson.
Huffing gas directly from a can may kill instantly?
The biggest risk of dying from nitrous is asphyxiation. You're starving your brain of oxygen while huffing it, and because nitrous causes you to disassociate and not care about what's happening, you can pass a certain threshold of disassociated where you literally don't care that you're asphyxiating. At that point, your life more or less depends on you passing out in a way that allows an unrestricted airway, so your unconscious body is able to breathe enough for you to wake back up.
I don't think Nick's going to die from huffing nitrous. I think he's going to give himself irreversible brain damage. Nitrous causes you to compulsively redose, so you basically just sit there and huff it until you run out. The more you have, the more you'll huff, and the more damage you'll do to your brain cells.
You'll know it when it happens, Nick. Eventually you'll huff a lot, and you'll get up and walk into another room, and that weird full-body tingly, buzzing feeling won't go away like it normally does, and you won't be able to think clearly, even though several minutes have passed. That's neurological damage.
