My only complaint is that its literally impossible to get to these sorts of outcomes in any country, given how byzantine and expensive the courts are. Wish there was someway to do this "small claims" style where two tards can just fight it out for reputational stakes only in front of a judge. A Small claims court for internet beefs, if you will. Read the Discord screenshots and compare to the claim in the stupid video. In relevant part, they say:

• Karl says his "total legal fees are almost $700k, notch paid around $300k". Note that Karl also had a GoFundMe for A$200k which means the out of pocket cost to him would be closer to $200k.
• Karl says "Billy paid more than" he did.

How does the "$1.8 million" come from? The moron in the video adds $700k + $700k + $400k (approximate value of the judgment including interest) to get to $1.8 million!

Jobst does not "owe" Billy any money for his own legal fees. That's ludicrous and is clickbait: that money obviously went to his own legal team, not Billy, as the video implies. Also, based on Karl's own statement, it appears he only paid around a third or less of his own fees while grifting the remainder from donors.

The amount of Billy's legal fees Jobst is on the hook for is a matter for the judge.

Of course, Jobst does owe the close to $400k judgment.

GDQ is truly dead as a livestream event due to the staff decisions over the years but every single year they manage to create a new cringiest moment of all time, and I will always respect it for that.

That's just off the top of my head. GDQ used to be a goldmine of funny cringe. There are some funny moments here and there in the later years (the AIr Canada thing), but post-2014 GDQ has been soulless tripe. To sum it up though, a skilled speedrunner (multiple tied WRs) was banned and taken off the rankings because he was allegedly a pedo (nothing illegal confirmed, but openly advocated for the possession of child porn to be legal/decriminalised on reddit). This person, out for either getting unbanned or simply revenge, compiled screenshots of discord messages of several prominent members of the community (from their personal discord servers - not the official Elite one) and disseminated them to progressives to get them cancelled on Twitter. These beliefs were (and many would consider them to still be) unpopular and thought of as reprehensible at the time (think typical internet bigotry stuff - and this was at the height of progressive cultural influence).

Given the banning of the alleged pedo set a precedent for banning people for political beliefs, they scrambled to figure out what to do. Eventually, Karl unbanned the alleged pedo without consulting the Elite Council (group of ~10 respected community members that decide on controversial matters like this) to prevent these other members being banned - including himself. Caused a shitstorm of people demanding the guy get re-banned or they want their own times removed from the site, basically everyone had huge arguments within the Elite on the forums and in discord over the whole situation while on the outside the community is being labelled as Nazis, white supremacists, the typical stuff. The guys getting cancelled were banned from GDQ for example.

Karl made a reddit post explaining the unban, said the original ban was misguided. But this really was only to prevent his (and other very prominent and important community members) being banned under the same principles given there was outside pressure to do so. As I said, this was met with a lot of backlash both within the community and from the outside. Within, he was criticised for making this decision without going through the established procedures for these situations (consulting council, community votes, transparency on decisions, etc.). From outside, it looked like the Elite was okay with being associated with pedos and racists.

Pissed off basically the entire community, the whole thing. 95% of the players are just normal good people that wanted to play GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, suddenly they're looped into this sort of bullshit and Karl really exacerbated the problems. The accused all managed their trashed reputations differently, but in the end most of the council was replaced, Karl scrubbed his internet history and managed to sort of get away from it, break off, and become a YouTuber and got big enough to kinda grow before the controversy could really stick to him. The alleged pedo was rebanned because the community overwhelmingly voted in favour of it and were threatening to remove their timespages if he wasn't. Everyone else remained on the rankings.

I was hesitant to type all this, because it really is ancient history. The community has long since evolved beyond what it was in those times, and most of the main players in that story are different people too, and they've basically all left the community at this point. I'd hate for kiwifarms to take a renewed interest in this particular story because I think everyone involved has suffered enough from this particular saga, including Karl. However, if the autists over there are going to dig anyway, they may as well have a first-hand memory from someone heavily involved in the community at the time, although I didn't see much of the behind the scenes stuff as I'm not on the council nor do I have access to site admin logs to see who did what or anything. Nevertheless, that's the basic story. It all happened late November 2018 if you are REALLY desperate to do more sleuthing on reddit or whatever. I may be misremembering, and glossing over details because honestly the truth is labyrinthine and would take 20,000 words or a 3 hour video to break it down entirely. Don't think I'll be saying much more on this topic (hopefully). To circle back to the question, Karl was initially in favour of banning the first guy. He later decided to negotiate with the user - reversing the ban to stop the exposés this user was posting everywhere. Then he unbanned them on his own when there was outside pressure to remove several of his (at the time) friends.

Because to my knowledge he has always maintained to be 100% legit at all times, never ceding even an inch of ground to his critics.
