This was something that kept coming up in T.E.Lawrence's book about his time helping the Arab Revolt during WW1. Basically it came down to the Arabs were massive retards and the best you could do was kinda point them in a direction until they finally got interested enough, at which point they'd finally give it a go until they got too bored.

There were other things like the Arabs demanding Artillery, despite only having Camels to pull it, because they believed louder guns=stronger guns. So they'd totally ignore pistol fire and rifle fire from a long enough distance because it was quiet, which meant it wouldn't hurt them. But they insisted on being given cannons because it was loud, so that meant it was best.

There was another one where he managed to finally co-ordinate an attack on the Ottomans. Aside from the fact that all of the Arabs were massive cowards the second anything started to go wrong, there was one group that was an integral part of the plan. They ended up retreating, and Lawrence thought it was because they were betraying him. Eventually they just rocked up to camp, and it turns out they left because it was time to eat.

Reasonable people can disagree on what's going on but Kenneth Pollack's book Armies of Sand (you can find it on scribd and probably elsewhere) makes a persuasive case it's mostly the cultural factors Jex alludes to - Arab officers are unwilling to ask questions in training because their vanity means they can't look like they don't already know the answer, and enlisted and officers hoard field manuals with maintenance information bc that's what makes them important.

There's definitely some coup-proofing going on, but you also have examples like Iraq and Syria where the most loyal forces were also the most competent and willing to conduct attacks.

I'm in agreement, but from a different angle. People want to pretend that they can predict the future based on the past, but history rhymes more often than it repeats. There's no interwoven alliance of opposed ideological powers with aspirations to global domination here. This is various economic hegemonic elites fighting over the last scraps of overtaxed and overleveraged systems, driving further and further instability. Conflict is mostly rising from opportunity within that malaise. Ukraine would be a very different story if Europe hadn't so thoroughly hollowed itself out to the point of being unable to meaningfully help at all. Ukraine would be a very different story if the US hadn't been so radicalized internally to cover its wholesale looting as to desire to turn inwards and stop giving a fuck about the world.

India and Pakistan can keep escalating here because none of the world really cares that much, they're too focused on their own self inflicted problems.
