UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Starmer clearly is out of his depth as PM and I don't believe that he wants the job if it means being here, hearing the never-ending criticism from both sides, and not at Davos or the WEF's latest shindig.
Starmer is a sociopath/narcisist type and the idea he'd ever willingly give up power is bonkers. You're in it for the long haul, unless he gets knifed by his own party

I agree with the psycho comments, and that is why the people behind the scenes are working on dismantling his already weak power base. I noticed they are starting to work on McSweeney now.

Starmer thinks the US trade deal will land him in good graces, but it has fallen on deaf ears. The Tories worked most of that deal anyway. People seem incredibly pissed about the India deal along with a ton of migrant stuff happening in the press.

With media outlets turning on him, I think it is an attempt to suffocate Morgan and make him quit. Starmer does EVERYTHING via Morgan MacSweeney, it's pretty nuts, but he approves everything.

Hilariously at odds with the government since this is an admission that a sugar tax doesn't work.

American drinks are some of the worst-tasting, highest sugar swill you can find.
I would agree before sugar tax but now it's just aspartame and acesulfame with some water and I'd be happy to drink corn syrup instead.

Oh, he wants the power just not the responsibility, criticism and constant bad press.

In his ideal world, criticism of Great Master Starmer would not be allowed and punishable by a trip to the cells.

However, even he can't demand total conformity, and I think that irks him.

Are we also getting infinite Americans to go with infinite Indians? If they're going to bring free speech with them I might be able to tolerate it.
The firearms are non-negotiable as well, but even though all your big names suck total balls I'm sure a few random guys in sheds will be able to step up and give the New New English (or would they be Old English what with that whole colony thing) what they want.

EDIT: The engine stuff is a real big deal since Caterpillar's heavily invested there to the point they outright own Perkins and Sabre. Everyone is going to win with a deal like that.

Anyone hear about the Britsh Movement members getting raided over a naughty birthday cake?
Yeah, I think I mentioned it.

Not surprised, and besides the greatest crime was the cake itself.

Delia Smith would not have approved!

Have they considered what damage both McSweeney and Sue Gray (apparently both are related?) can do to them, if they try to backstab Starmer?

It would be stupidity, yet something which Labour would do because 'nobody can tell us otherwise'.

The counter argument would have to be 'well Rayner, Reeves, Streeting etc. has dirt on Starmer, so BTFO!'

This is why, though I burn with optimism's flames (XTC mention there), I can see it crashing down.

Blair's government, though one of the worst I've lived through, at least had unity up until 2003. This Government reminds of a Bonnie Tyler song ad-libbbed:

Totally Shit From The Start.

Oh great, thank you Vladimir!

Related to the Trans malarkey, a Labour Councillor quits and cries 'Starmer Man Bad!'

A trans Labour councillor has quit the party having accused Sir Keir Starmer of "throwing transgender people under the bus" in response to the Supreme Court ruling on gender.

Councillor on Plymouth City Council, Dylan Tippetts, said he can no longer represent a party "that does not support my fundamental rights".

Britain's top judges unanimously agreed the terms "woman" and "sex" in gender legislation will only refer to a biological woman and biological sex.

Starmer's shift in standpoint from previously saying that "trans women are women" has led to Tippetts' resignation.

The PM now believes that "a woman is an adult female". He said: "The court made that absolutely clear. I actually welcome the judgment because I think it gives real clarity."

Tippetts stated: "Everyone deserves the right to live peacefully, and the Labour Party continues to deny transgender people that basic right.

"I cannot continue to represent a party that does not support my fundamental rights. I cannot as a trans person continue to support the Labour Party."

Also, charges against Qur'an burner changed over fury of CPS bringing in 'blasphemy law':

How dare Starmer cause anudda trans genocide?! Let me shit next to men without judging me!!!!!

They always have that weird look to them, don't they...
Imagine how devastated you'd be if you voted for a Labour councillor then she resigns because of herself and not the hundreds/thousands of local people (friends, family and community) that voted for you.

It's a Labour council so you'd be working with the same people anyways.
