The entire county is just scrub and sage. It's poor, it's dry, and it's ugly. Winnemucca is the only incorporated city, and they're incredibly proud of their status of being large enough to have a Wal-Mart, although they were dead set against it at the time. That's also the city's largest employer- with the next likely being the Flying J truckstop.

Being a slight diversion off I-80 only brings so much - if it wasn't for the long haul truckers, there probably wouldn't be anything left of the town - as far as I recall there was one theater that was open randomly, and two greasy spoons. They really want to be Virginia City, but had one Victiorian era hotel which was evidently torn down in 2019.

But, yeah, I don't think Nevada meth whores are going to bring the city more commerce.

I went scrolling through the user-submitted photos of the town on Google Maps, and it does seem to be a nice, cute little small town. Fairly clean, homey, but with plenty of conveniences (and LOTS of lodging, which makes sense). A museum, a train station, a nice view of the mountains, they have a rodeo, gambling obviously.

Even a big W. I bet there's buried treasure there.

You're all just haters, I for one am excited to see Greer afford an exactly 1m x 1m parcel of land to turn into a brothel. That's standing room for at least one hooker! And if he stacks the hookers on top of each other, why, he could fit a dozen into this illustrious establishment. People driving past Winnemucca would marvel at the Jenga tower of hookers lying in the middle of nowhere. He'd become a local celebrity.

I don't mean it to make the impression that it's absolutely worthless - it's somehow managed to sustain itself despite being over 2 hours from Reno. It's just very economically depressed, and there's not really any chance of advancing except outside of the city. I was shocked to see one really nice place on Zillow, but a lot of it is still 70s trailers and a handful of newer stick built homes.

Fernley or Elko would make much more sense to zero in on for whoredom; Elko has the mine and Fernley is an hour outside of Reno with lots of warehousing, so there's going to be traffic throughout.

When the IFP stuff was brought up, Russell blurted to the court that he can pay the filing fee, so the judge ordered him to do so. Hardin hardly had to challenge it at all. He can keep that ammunition for a later date.

Even better there really is no path for Russ to reinstate his IFP status. He TOLD the Court he wasn't IFP. The Judge gave him several outs. But Russ apparently in a desperate attempt to forestall any discussions of whore spending and buying whorehouses in front of the Judge just said yes he could pay, he would just prefer not to. What's he going to base any plea or appeal on? "I lied to the Judge because I was ashamed?" Yeah, Hardin would have a field day with that. Just by letting the Judge know what the Important Business Meeting that Russ wanted to cancel the hearing in favor of was all about.

Without phonebooking myself too much, I will say given some first-hand experience with the environment there, Russell is an even bigger idiot than previously thought if he sincerely believes he can convince small-town Nevada to embrace him in any fashion to create any kind of substantial change and/or open a brothel of his own.

Small-town anywhere, but Nevada in particular, is rife with "good ol' boy" clubs. A well-spoken wealthy person or group can barely make inroads in those small towns. Fucking Wal-mart has trouble bringing in Sam's Clubs and Wal-mart Supercenters into those places, despite the obvious benefit (blah blah muh ebil wal-mart blah blah, shaddup, there's minimal or no existing business to "crush" in most of those towns), no matter how much money it waves under the noses of these imbeciles on the local county commissioner boards.

A drooling moron that can barely be understood when speaking, and who writes the kind of dreck he writes, and with his "track record" in court, has zero chance of getting anywhere with those "city father" types, especially concerning the brothels. In that particular industry, money talks (and Russell doesn't have any) but you also need a relatively clean nose and a willingness to grease some palms. He's broke, an obvious pervert with a shitty track record, and he's astonishingly cheap. He'll never "spread a little love around" to keep those gears greased and the handful of people in those positions of authority to allow him to buy and run a brothel can smell that stinginess on him. Even if he eventually figured out he needs to engage in outright bribery to get started in that business, he's far too stupid and blunt to know how to go about it with any kind of discretion. He'll never get close.

One subtle point I'm not sure most people realize about legalized prostitution in Nevada is the fact that it's only legal in counties that choose to allow it and that have a population lower than some fixed amount. The people running that little industry explicitly do not want to do anything to encourage population growth in the places where they operate -- it can literally drive them out of business. The counties where it's legal are low-density, and they like it that way. That makes them automatically very insular, and very suspicious and weary of outsiders trying to muscle into their territory.

You should see how hard it is to open a casino out there :story: The Nevada Gaming Commission is all-powerful, but only after the "city fathers" say "yes, you can open here."

No, they are not. The women pictured are much older than the usual fare. Not that age helps the present offerings look much better, but at least most of them have fewer wrinkles. The two closest to Vegas (Sheri's Ranch and Chicken Ranch) both have websites listing (and showing) their "menus." The selection's a little better, but the proximity to Vegas makes them both absurdly overpriced.

Note: the population limit is 700,000 and only one county in Nevada (Clark, where Vegas is) exceeds that. All other counties where it's illegal have explicitly chosen to outlaw it and the counties where it is legal have brothel ordinances that limit the locations and/or number of licenses.

Given how literally anything involving the sex trade has some connection to organized crime, they want to be as low-key as possible anyway.

Russell is well to be warned that if he steps on the wrong toes trying to bulldoze a whorehouse in, there is a chance he will wind up in a shallow hole in the desert somewhere.
